Ki-nda dry…
During my youngling years, used to come here with friends when it was a Chinese restaurant. Then came a couple of times when the Neptune group took over and turned it into this Japanese restaurant.
It’s located right across the street from the New West skytrain station. There are a handful of free parking spaces available on its private parking lot, otherwise it’s paid street parking or the parkade.
Inside is a pretty basic layout with booth seats by the window, tables to the middle and the sushi bar to the inner corner. Very casual setting.
Here were the food I ordered;
Miso soup (Complimentary). Nice and hot the way I like it, thank you! Tako wasabi. Fresh and pretty good, probably one of the best price so far for this dish compared to other places. Kani sunomono. First, it was too sweet (added too much sugar), secondly the amount of crab meat was almost a joke (come on guys, the prepackaged low quality crab meat is cheap), lastly the crab meat was dry! (Hint: There’s a new supplier has better and whole crab meat chunks, better and same price!) Soft shell crab. Decent size, lightly battered and seasoned just the way it should! Oyster motoyaki. It was okay but I would like it more if they were made from fresh oysters on a shell. Sakura roll. Looked very promising like a blossom in the menu but in reality just another basic roll with no hint of Sakura whatsoever. (It’s called a Sakura roll, add some pink or red to it!!!) Red tuna, albacore toro, salmon, chopped scallops, tamago, ikura nigiris. The toro was missing that butteriness, the chopped scallops and tamago were okay, ikura was so so, the salmon and red tuna were dry. Assorted sashimi. I honestly am shocked on how every piece of the sashimis could be so dry and tasteless. It literally seems like the chef dab dry every single piece of sashimi with bounty paper towels.
The services here were quite accommodating and friendly, at least during my visit here.
As for the food, I remember it used to be decently okay, maybe different chefs?! It was somewhat disappointing during this visit; some of the ingredients were off, the sashimis and nigiris were quite dry. This is a prime location for any restaurant in New West and offers great potentials if it offers their customers quality food and service, unfortunately it fell quite short this...
Read moreThis place has been here for quite a long time and i've been eating here for over 10 years.
As of late however, it's not a very good place for quite a few reasons. Customer Service is pretty damned horrible. The chefs are pretty good guys but the waiters are pretty bad.
There's one male waiter who's pretty on point but the others are gonna leave you hanging / not understand an order or like i was told when i asked for just a straight Kani Roll "Why don't you just do a california roll with no mayo?"
Literally wouldn't put a piece of crab in-between rice in a roll for me. That's a joke!
The Price is steep. My family are commercial fishermen and i know what decent quality is and have eaten japanese cuisine my entire life. They are overcharging for most things, other than alcohol which is admittedly pretty cheap.
What costs 1.75 - 1.50 a piece of nigiri costs about $2.00 - $3.00 here. And if your into a traditional japanese meal, it might not seem like much but that racks up real quick.
They do have some good lunch specials, but it just brings the price down to "Standard." And for the extra price... Your not getting anything but "Standard" quality food the entire time.
Some days, the food is also a bit lackluster with loose rolls, and octopus etc still with some frozen water glazing it.
There are better options, like Hyjack literally across the street on carnarvon with up to date interior, cheaper prices and better quality. Or Hi Sushi down the street.
Me and my Office employees have taken our business to Hyjack across the street. Customer service is better, quality is better, prices are better and honestly, Ki sushi is just banking on the fact it's got signs and it's across from new west station.
There's not a single thing this place has that others don't. Nothing special that would keep your attention.
Go ACROSS THE STREET literally, and get...
Read moreOkay. So I USED to be a regular at this place because it was so close to where I live... but that soon changed when I went there one afternoon craving sushi. I had ordered the 3 item deal that came with miso soup. The three items I chose were the California roll, salmon nigiri, and the spicy salmon roll. I had also ordered the soft shell crab on the side. Luckily for me, I started with the soft shell crab... then my California roll... and as I was going to grab a piece of my salmon nigiri (salmon on top of rice), I seen this odd transparent circular piece of something. First thought I assumed it was a little piece of green onion... (and as I am writing this, I am getting goosebumps reminiscing about this horrible experience)... as I carefully inspected it... I had seen ANOTHER little transparent thread in another piece so I pulled that one out with my chopstick... and there it was, a roundworm. A damn parasite. I almost threw up. It was STILL wriggling as I held it in my chopstick. My sister and I immediately lost our appetites. Now I am aware that fish carry parasites hence why they freeze it for weeks before consumption, but it's apparent to me that someone in that kitchen was not careful when cleaning the fish. I can only imagine how many people consumed pieces from the same salmon cut! I am COMPLETELY turned off raw fish and do not see myself eating anything raw for a very long time. Not only was there a parasite in my food, but when I had alerted one of the serves he followed with the "would you like to exchange it from another?" You're kidding right? The manager did not even come to my table to apologize or anything!!! They copped my meal except for the soft shell crab. I am definitely never coming to this place of establishment any longer! Message for the owner: BE MINDFUL OF WHAT YOU ARE FEEDING YOUR CUSTOMERS AND TUNE UP ON YOUR CUSTOMER...
