Terrible customer service! I don’t normally write reviews, but to save anybody else the hassle, be sure to check your credit card bill after you’ve left! I booked at one price and once I was home, I checked on my credit card statement and noticed that the price was higher than what I had been booked at. When I called to correct, they told me “oh there’s also a mandatory Sudbury tax” which I was never informed of during booking OR check-in and basically “sorry about your luck, call the town of Sudbury” without any other help. Their tile flooring around the pool was extremely slippery when wet to the point that my younger kids could not even walk on the floor at all. Their breakfast was mediocre best, you could hardly eat it. Our group was hassled for noise complaints , even though we hardly spent any time at the hotel, our kids were in bed before 10 both nights (late evening and early morning hockey games ) , and we had the rooms beside, above and below our community room, yet another group was running around, playing mini sticks and going in and out of the doors until 2:30am both nights without issues . Bathrooms in the rooms are very small, can barely close the door. Use caution when booking here and be sure to check over your bill after...
Read moreThis weekend we arrived at the Holiday Inn Sudbury promptly at check in time for our staycation only to have the reception desk inform us that they do not admit locals. The booking had been made a full week earlier and I had received multiple emails since verifying the booking, and providing information about our stay. At no point in this process was there any indication that they would not admit us based on our home address. Had there been prior notice we would have been able to redirect our patronage to one of Sudbury's other fine hotels that have taken good care of us in the past. The had apparently tried to call us once the day of, but made no further attempts. When I raised this point, a second employee took over the interaction and reached out to his manager to accommodate us. I will note that he was very professional and resolved the matter for us. Despite their intention to turn us away, our room was ready immediately and was adequate to our needs. Nonetheless, our very first interaction was to be made to feel unwelcome. We were informed the reason for this policy was that locals had previously done damages to their hotel. Considering they take deposits, have insurance, and have customers accept liability for such damages, this seems an invalid excuse to violate Section 1 of the Ontario Human Rights Code* which establishes Place of Origin as protected against discrimination.
This initial interaction put a sour note on our stay, made us feel unwelcome anytime we subsequently encountered staff, and placed an unnecessary damper on the birthday celebrations we were there for. As such, in future we will be directing our personal patronage, and encouraging that of the various organizations we are affiliated with who bring considerable out of town business to Sudbury, to IHG's competitors.

Read moreGotta be honest, this has to have been one of the most subpar holiday inns I've stayed at throughout Canada. I will say that during check-in the staff that checked me in were quite polite and friendly, no issues there.
Room (218) felt mostly clean but just dingy and rundown. Room door didn't close properly - had to shove the door open and closed; only one set of bedside outlets were working (alarm clock was dead), USB plug ins were destroyed and unusable, outlets were so loose my charging plugs would just fall out; shower lower faucet was spraying in wild directions when using shower head causing water to spray outside onto the tile, dirty towel was left under the vanity; cabinet door containing fridge was hanging on with one hinge causing the door to dig and drag into the floor. Bedside drawer tables were loose and wobbly, the left hand side drawer kept rolling open because the table was coming out of the wall. Absolutely most infuriating thing though was the wifi was hot garbage. Don't think I've ever had a worse wifi signal - and I've stayed in Bed and Breakfasts in the middle of nowhere. You would not be able to get any remote work done reliably here with the amount of times a connection drops, I think I maintained at most 2 signal bars when it did connect - not really much of an excuse with this one, especially if people are here for work and conferences.
Just A personal thing I didn't care for was the sheets were very "silky" and not a standard hotel percale cotton you get everywhere else. The top sheet kept sliding off and getting tangled with the comforter because they were just too slick. I did pull up the sheets and the mattress was clean which was good.
The two good things: shower head pressure was strong and water was hot, fully adjustable AC (window unit) with an openable window i.e. unlike some hotels you're not stuck trying to sleep at a prefixed temperature.
Drove in from Manitoba (from a Holiday Inn Express no less) and at that point I just wanted to get some sleep so for the night it was what it was. Ended up not really getting a great night sleep either but it was a quick layover before heading back home. Would personally never stay at this location again; I think at this point knock it down and build a Holiday...
