I am a university student at Dal and one thing I try to do at least once a week is explore to find a new study spot. The Dal Art Centre has a lot of potential for being a great study spot, but sadly fails because of outdated technology and furniture.
Pros: There is not a lot of foot traffic in the building, so talking noise is usually low. Usually you can hear a piano playing, which is very relaxing. Sometimes other instruments are being played as well. It has a very serene tranquil atmosphere... it be carful sometimes it is too tranquil and you drift off to sleep! The auditorium has good acoustics but could use seating and technology upgrade.
Cons: The study tables are makeshift stations, and only a select few have plug in options. “Plug-in options” is overstating the technology level. Some of the desks have an industrial old wall plug screwed into the desk, which is powered by an extension cord that you have to find the end and plug it into one of the two wall outlets available. No more than two people at one time can have their desk’s extension cord plugged into the wall. Per floor there are only maybe 6 desks at most, all of which are crammed into a hallway corner. It is not very conducive to a learning environment.
The fabric chairs... well at one time they were probably the colour of Ronald McDonald’s shoes. Now they are so filthy and worn that they are a dirty orange. Many of the chair cushions have rips in them and if the wheels move (and your lucky to find one with all 4 wheels) the squeak loudly.
Summary: Atmosphere is perfect for a study environment, but the poor quality, primitive furniture and low-grade technology prevents it from being a practical one. I would recommend this place if you needed somewhere to go for an hour, but no...
Read moreI love love LOVE the Cohn for musical acts - beautiful acoustics and no bad seats / obstructed views. If you have mobility challenges it can be a bit daunting if you come through the front entrance - be sure to use the side door if you need to or would rather avoid stairs. The floor in the auditorium is also sloped and the space between seat rows not overly generous, so plan accordingly. The washrooms can also be hard to get to as they are on the lower floor - accessible by elevator, but it's...

Parking can be a bit of a challenge but there is lots of side streets. Just if its a busy event may have to be prepared to walk a...
