For the past two and half years (pandemic!) I’ve streamed Cineplex movies online rather than going to an actual theatre. Decided to go to my first in-person film today and ventured out to Scotiabank Theatre (formerly Empire Theatres when I worked there ~20 years ago). This has always been a solid, well maintained venue, and today was no exception. My only disappointment, which is also the reason why I will revert back to online movie streaming/Cineplex Store, was the other moviegoers. We were stuck in front of two Chatty Cathies who felt the need to share their monologue of unsolicited thoughts with the rest of the theatre despite being asked politely (twice) not to talk during the film (“Oh, listen to this music”, “Oh, that’s her”, “Oh, remember when blah blah blah”). As a result, I have no idea whether the film was good or not because their constant chatter was such a distraction. Advice for moviegoers: - No one is interested in paying $12+ to listen to your deepest thoughts during the movie, so please leave the theatre if you must talk, or simply stay home and watch the movie in the comfort of your own home - Please keep your feet off of the seat in front of you: someone will have to clean off the shoe marks and no one wants to rest their arms on messy armrests - Unless you are an emergency room doctor/an on-call doctor, your spouse is in labour or you are a trial attorney waiting for a verdict, there is probably no good reason to check/answer your cellphone during the movie - Please remember to take your garbage with you Advice for Scotiabank Theatre: - Ushers used to walk up and down the aisle halfway through the movie in the past. Resuming this practice might deter chatter during movies - A message advising moviegoers to turn off their phone/not talk during the movie used to appear as part of the pre-show, but was absent today. Instead, we were treated to a lot of commercials and a few trailers. It wouldn't hurt to reinstate the "turn off your phone/do not talk during the movie” messaging for those who seem to have forgotten This is still a very nice theatre, but, unfortunately, my return to in-person movie viewing was marred and my money was wasted, as I couldn’t focus on the film due to the chatty actions of two other moviegoers.

Their food concession and ticket employee named Nidhi failed to wash her hands after using the washroom in different occassions. Last one it happened was after I watched a movie and I wanted to report it to their manager but I had to leave to go somewhere. So, I decided to call this location, twice but no one answered and there is no option to leave a message. So, I called the head office and left a voicemail but a week or so later no one called me back. So, I decided to email guest services. When no one responded after almost a week, I went back to this location to ask whether they have received the email. I was told that they don't always receive all emails containing complaints. And I was told by young female manager that she cannot do anything about it because I should've told someone on the spot and it's been few weeks. I tried to argue that not everyone complains right away esp if, they are there to de-stress. Also, the first time that I complained about Nidhi was done on the same day and she had seen me doing it. She retaliated by talking to some of her coworkers that whenever they seen me, they would treat and look at me differently. I brought it up to the young manager and she mentioned about being the "bigger person" She forgot that I'm not the one getting paid! She mentioned about going to a different theatre that I like. That theatre is way farther from me!

During busy nights, I noticed the staff tends to let their own coloured folks with the same ethnicity to jump the queue while others are ahead of them. I was pissed one time because the staff was so distracted talking in his ethnic language to people watching their Bollywood movies and he purposely cooked/prepared their order first though I was ahead of the queue and when I told him that I been waiting he still, wanted me to wait longer because he wanted to speak to delivery guy who speaks his language. The manager that is the same colour as the staff wearing business casual, see the whole thing unfold but didn't say anything. When I complained, he was in a hurry to talk to people going to watch Bollywood movies. I doubt he even remember the complaint I had.

I had been watching in this location for two decades the least but this is my first time leaving an online review, a bad one, sadly. Unlike, before I did surveys but all of them, I had given good surveys and not necessarily for this...

I visit the theatre here every holiday, we went on the 25th and it was to see “Wonka” great film, horrid experience. They’ve made the drinks and popcorn smaller, with the markup it’s insane to me cineplex would do this; but that’s besides the point not this theatres fault.

What is their fault is the abhorrent condition of the theatre. The seats were musty, stinky and filthy. there was a sticky grime all over the armrests and floors and the fabric seats had stains and dust and grime on them.

The theatre was empty when i walked in and littered with old garbage from previous viewings. There was litter scattered everywhere.

I had the misfortune of having to use the restroom during my show and it was DISGUSTING. The floors were sticky and the smell of urine was present before even walking in the doors. Every stall was filth, like worse than any dive bar i’ve been in. No staff seems to care. I ran out gagging. My partner was shocked because of how sick the experience was also.

It’s already expensive but really with the state the theatre was left it was a hazard, we’re still in a pandemic and all the airs they made prior to lockdown being lifted are gone. there is no cleanliness or procedures taking place here. it’s not safe.

i would have complained. but there was a lack of staff as we exited as and only a few as i entered. we went to the late show. No care or consideration and a disgusting level of filth. All for the same old price.

If you’re trying to avoid covid or germs this isn’t the place to visit.I for one won’t be returning. the staff are rude, and not doing their job and this place must have really lax or absent management.

Stink,...
