Having lived in Asia for 6 years, I prefer authentic Japanese food. My go-to place for AUCE Japanese is Jukai in Dartmouth, but I decided to try Mizu for their AUCE with a family member. We both regreted our decision.
This location has a very open-concept design, resulting in it being very noisy which makes for an unpleasant experience. This is not the restaurant's fault, but the customers who cause the noise. During our early Saturday dinner, several families had screaming children with them, with some parents allowing their children to stand up on seats in the booths.
The menu is limited when it comes to authentic Japanese food (sashimi, nigiri, maki, uramaki, and temaki). If you are looking for westernized Japanese food, Mizu might meet that need. Although if you are looking for authentic Japanese, try elsewhere (i.e. Jukai Dartmouth, or Sushi Jet Larry Uteck).
Quick review of what we ordered:
Sashimi is good with fair size portion slices, although slow to arrive at the table...likely because sashimi is costly to the restaurant resulting in a loss if customers eat too much of it. Red tuna sashimi is not offered.
Nigiri is made with too much rice/veggies and limited fish protein.
Maki and uramaki were also made with too much rice.. Rice is a filler to fill up customers because rice is cheap. Too much of the filling is veggies (cucumber, etc) instead of fish protein.
Something unique at Mizu that I had not experienced at other restaurants was the beef sashimi (raw beef slices). It was very slightly braised on the outside and raw throughout the rest of the slice at this location. Not bad but would probably not try again.
Good selection of menu appetizers. The calamari and raw squid rings were good. Beef and chicken skewers were also good and flavorful.
This location has a self-serve dessert bar with custard shooters, mini cakes, chocolate pudding, and ice cream. I did not try any of it.
On a good note, staff are friendly and quick. The restaurant, tables/chairs, and washrooms are clean.
I would not recommend this location, and it definitely does not compare to the authentic experience and food at Jukai so I would not return to Mizu. For almost $95 with tax and tip for two adults with no purchased beverages/alcohol, Mizu is not...
Read moreEdit: we went back, we didn't have a pleasant experience. Hopeful that it's just temporary, might return in the future.
TLDR: really great sushi, I reccomend the speciality rolls and udon. Great atmosphere, you'll leave satisfied! Price point is bang on!
We are long time patrons of another well known sushi house in HRM. A friend suggested we branch out and try Mizu based on the comments of her co-worker.
We visited Mizu tonight, and we will be back! At our normal spot, the food is quite salty, not to the point that it's not palatable, but just enough to require lots of liquid, and you feel it the next day. Mizu wasnt salty, perfectly seasoned without going overboard. The rice to fillings ratio in the rolls was a pleasent surprise, there were enough of each ingredient that you could really taste every part of the sushi. Perfect balance between fish, hard vegetables and avocado.
the Udon was fantastic - some of the best I've had! The pink lady, mizu and volcano rolls were some of the best rolls I've had in Canada! The ramen was really good, as was the red curry.
It was nice being able to scroll through pictures and order that way, the only issue was we weren't reading what was in things.. this isnt a downfall, but just something we will watch for in the future!
** the slushies are more like milkshakes!
We had a bit of issues near the end of our time at mizu, we had ordered a few things that never came, when we spoke with the server about it they said to re order them. We did that but they still never came.
Overall, the little hickups didnt take away from the overall positive experience and fantastic...
Read moreDO NOT EAT HERE! Our experience was not an enjoyable one! The all you can eat menu is limited, there’s no variety or quality! Rolls are super simple rolls nothing special!
Staff are not friendly at all! We sat down at 7:30 (group of 6) friends that were there to eat, have a good time and talk! Half of us eat all you can eat, the other half ordered from the menu. The food came fast, but since the table was full, when the waiters will reach the to leave or pick up dishes, her shirt would touch some of the plates with food on it, no care what so ever!
We than finished eating at 9, paid by 9:15 and we sat there for a while chatting. Before we finished eating since the restaurant closed at 10 and there were only 4 tables left with people on it, staff started to sweep and mop the floors in preparation for closing. At 9:40, some kid that worked there tried to get rid of us by saying that we had to pay by 9:50 because their “system” closes at 9:50 and the restaurant closes at 10 pm. Not realizing that we had already paid. Not 5 minutes later, some other lady can al told us that the restaurant closes at 10. It was only 9:45.
Health regulations in NS does not allow staff to sweep or mod around customers unless there was an accidental spill while you’re still eating.
The staff is very friendly at the beginning but quickly turns once you’re sitting down. They have no patience with the customer and do not pay attention to health regulations, to the point that some had fake nails or painted nails.
