These stairs were truly intense. Going down the steps was a breeze. Coming back up took everything I had and then some. My legs trembled, I tasted both acid and metal in my mouth but I was determined to get it done. Found myself subtly competing with an older man. Well 'competing' is a stretch, he was clearly fitter and I just stared at his back a lot and willed my legs to try to catch up with him which never happened so I just settled for keeping him in my line of sight. But yeah, let's use 'competing'. Anyway at the top I found him doing some stretches and with gasping breaths I enquired if he'd be going down again. He said that was his third time and he has two more to do. He nimbly skipped back down the stairs for number four but made sure to ask if I'd be going again in a very encouraging manner. His genuine kindness is the only thing that stopped me from giving the crass response that flitted across my mind (my fellow Barbadian people can easily guess what it was). Instead I said, "No sir, but have a good day." between gasps for air. It was around this time that I experienced a mild but unusually persistent cramp and began to hobble the 1.5 miles home. On a good note though, now that I'm back in Barbados I've been working on my fitness and I look forward to meeting those stairs again without wheezing or cramps or the flavour of acid...
Read moreWentworth Stairs hiking Climbing the Wentworth Stairs in Hamilton last week was an exhilarating experience that tested my endurance and rewarded me with stunning views. The Wentworth Stairs, also known as Escarpment Stairs, consist of 498 steps ascending the Niagara Escarpment. These stairs follow the historic route of the Old East End Incline Railway, which operated from 1895 to 1936. Today they serve as a popular spot for fitness enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The climb was challenging but manageable, with platforms along the way to rest and catch my breath. The narrow steps are well maintained, and the surrounding greenery provides a serene backdrop. Reaching the top, I was treated with panoramic views of Hamilton and the surrounding landscape, making the effort worthwhile. For those interested in longer adventure, the stairs connect to the Escarpment Rail Trail and the Bruce Trail, offering extended hiking opportunities. Whether you are seeking vigorous workout or a peaceful nature walk Wentworth Stairs offers a unique and rewarding experience. For visual glimpse of the climb, you might find my “Wandering with Nil You Tube channel...
Read moreFirst time doing any of the stairs and this set was fantastic with a beautiful view of the city. The stairs are narrow and steep but they have little platform stops along the way. There is the option to stop midway (Sherman Cut) or to continue on the way to the bottom. The steps at the bottom are further apart so provide a unique workout. Push yourself and go to the bottom and back. You've got this! 498 steps from top of Mountain Park Ave to bottom at Wentworth St. Just under a km of stairs. Parking is located at the top of Mountain Park with a nice view of the city, a good place to stretch/jog before tackling the stairs. The people were inspiring and encouraging along my trek back up. So thanks to all of them. ♡
Added some extra photos of one section of the stairs that can set off some anxiety for those who do not like heights. . .there is one set of stairs along the wall of the Sherman Cut on the top half that can trigger anxiety/panic/fear. Just keep your head up and you can...
