We didn't know about this museum until we discovered it on Google maps during a visit to Lindsay. It was well worth the visit, with admission a very reasonable $5.00.
The building is a gorgeous 19th century Gaol, which has been kept in extremely good condition. The interior now houses a remarkably well curated museum which tells some of the history of the region and the city, and more specifically the Gaol itself.
There are three sections to explore. The basement level displays some of the actual cells where prisoners were kept, and describes living conditions and the history of the Gaol. The signs and information are very detailed. You get a very creepy sense of what it would have been like to be a prisoner.
The ground floor and top floor are where you find the regional and city exhibits. Some of the displays will be rotated with new ones. There are numerous artifacts, pictures, furniture, clothing, etc. Check their website for further information.
Staff are friendly and informative. You won't regret spending some time here, highly...
Read moreWe decided to go last year for a paranormal investigation with paranormal seekers. We were 15 mins early and were told to sit in with the group ahead of us until they were ready. A lady in a ridiculous tutu came in and said we will be ready for everyone but the late ones....meaning us....lmfao we were 15 mins early. We were called the late ones 3 times and made to feel pretty small. During the tour it was to be paranormal related but ended up being a middle aged women gossip center. We ultimately left early with no history or info on the gaol. We then tried to book a tour ourselves without paranormal seekers there and we were told no they only do things with paranormal seekers. Needless to say, they obviously don't care about other paranormal groups or visitors. We will never go back complete waste of time and money to be treated...
Read moreWe wanted to know more about the City of Kawartha Lakes and the surrounding towns and villages. Lindsay has a very rich history and more people should pop in and visit this gem. The museum is housed in the old Lindsay Jail, but there are so many stories about the founders of Lindsay, the settlers, the many industries and Lindsay's contribution to society, history and importance to the surrounding area. Well worth the time and we will be returning to learn more. Clarence, our guide, did a great job communicating the many stories and his life experience with town characters and buildings. He was extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Thanks Clarence! Our Friday tour lasted over 2 hours and we enjoyed...
