The 8.5KM Tom Taylor Trail is an ideal route for walkers and joggers. Had a great time exploring the trail the other day. The trail, I understand, is Newmarket's portion of the Nokiidaa Trail system that extends through Aurora, Newmarket, and East Gwillimbury. The Trail follows the Holland River and Fairy Lake downstream to link up with the Rogers Reservoir Trail in East Gwillimbury. The traditional kilometre landmarks, once used by the original inhabitants of the area, are placed along the route. The coyotes warning signs seen at some parts of the route made me feel a bit adventurous! The paved path makes it accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities. This trail also provides access to various local attractions, including the Paul Semple Park. The official starting point of the trail is located at Saint John Sideroad and Industrial Parkway. Dogs are welcome on the trail but must be kept on a leash. The trail is named in honor of Tom Taylor, a former mayor of Newmarket who also served as a town councilor and regional councilor. He was a strong advocate for green space preservation and played a significant role in the development of this trail system. The Paul Semple Park, located along the trail, offers a peaceful and inviting space for visitors. The park commemorates Paul Semple, a 22-year-old Newmarket resident who tragically lost his life on June 22, 1992, while bravely intervening to protect a man, woman, and child during an assault in Toronto. In recognition of his heroic actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Bravery on September 8, 1995. Whether you're looking for a quiet place to reflect, a scenic area for a family picnic, or a starting point to explore Newmarket's natural beauty, Paul Semple Park offers something for everyone.
