Major's Hill Park provides a nice view of the East Block of the Parliament Buildings, the Bytown museum, the Rideau canal and the Library of Parliament which is facing the Ottawa River. This Park was formerly named Colonel Hill Park after Lt Colonel John By. However, the name was changed to Major's Hill Park when Major Daniel Bolton replaced By in his governance's position. Major's Hill Park hosts lots of festivals and is especially popular during Canada day celebrations. In this park, there is a statue of Lieutenant Colonel John By who was the lead engineer responsible for the creation of the Rideau canal. In 1827 the newly developing site was named Bytown after Colonel By. Bytown's name changed to Ottawa in 1855. This Hill is owned by the indigenous Algonquin people. The Government of Canada's occupation of the land remains unratified by treaty agreement. If you like my reviews, photos or videos give them a thumbs up. Also why not ask the NCC to have the name of the park to either be changed back to Colonel Hill Park, or to Algonquin Chief Tessouat Hill. Who knows what Major Bolton did for Bytown other than live in By's old house on the Hill.

Beautiful park offering great views of Parliament Hill. Located only 5 minutes walking distance from Parliament Hill, this place offers a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of Ottawa's city center. Apart from lush green vegetation it features a lot of historical monuments, statues and interesting maps and also an unobstructed view of Parliament Hill and the Rideau river. The park has a lot of seating and relaxing areas as well as large green meadows for people to play games or have a picnic. It is clean, safe and very well maintained. Public toilets are located on the north side of the park close to the National Gallery of Canada (inside are free toilets as well). The park's location between Parliament Hill (in the southwest) and the National Gallery of Canada and Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica (in the northeast) makes it an ideal midpoint to take a leisurely break while touring the city. During our visit, we encountered local volunteer guides wearing blue uniforms who graciously offered valuable information, maps, and helpful tips about Ottawa, adding an extra touch of hospitality to our experience. Visited on a Monday, July 2023.

Major’s Hill Park is a gem in the heart of Ottawa, offering a serene escape from the bustling city life. The park’s well-maintained pathways are perfect for a leisurely stroll, with plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the views. The lush greenery, vibrant flowerbeds, and historical monuments make it a picturesque spot for photography. One of the highlights is the stunning view of the Parliament Buildings, the Rideau Canal, and the Ottawa River. It’s an ideal spot for a picnic with family or friends, and during the warmer months, you can often find various cultural and community events happening, adding to the lively atmosphere. The park’s proximity to other major attractions, like the ByWard Market and the National Gallery of Canada, makes it a convenient stop for tourists. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, a place to exercise, or just somewhere to enjoy the beauty of Ottawa, Major’s Hill Park is definitely worth a visit.

A gorgeous park featuring some of the best lookouts in Ottawa, offering stunning views of the Ottawa Locks on the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River and the Parliament Buildings. An exceptional site to see tulips blooming in the spring. Major’s Hill Park is the Capital’s first park, used as such since 1826, when the building of the Rideau Canal began. In 1867, fireworks and bonfires in the park marked the Capital’s first Canada Day celebrations. It was formally established as a park in 1875. A highly recommended spot if you are interested in taking a break in the shade from all the site seeing in Ottawa!! Very clean and well protected by police all around to keep you safe.
