I’d probably rate 4.5 but as that’s not an option I rounded up to 5! I typically prefer exploring the work of local, living artists, but whenever I visit a new city, I make a point to check out its major art gallery. Seeing traditional, modern, and contemporary pieces, especially from renowned artists, helps me appreciate art as a whole. My visit to the National Gallery of Canada was a fantastic experience.
The architecture alone is stunning, beautiful atriums and glass ceilings flood the space with natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere. The exhibits were thoughtfully curated, offering a great balance of contemporary, modern, and classic works. I particularly loved the sections dedicated to Indigenous and Canadian art, which felt deeply connected to the country’s identity and history focusing more on communities, nature and identity.
I’m not usually drawn to American or European art (specifically portraits of men or religion which was what most of this exhibit was) but it’s exciting to see pieces by the American and European masters and reflect on how much the art world has evolved. Some of the work that was not religion centered I felt were not some of the greatest by these well known artists.
The contemporary exhibits might not be for everyone, and can be difficult to understand (and I can understand why, but also recognize the significance). I thought there was a nice balance between conceptual, statement pieces, videos and more technical works.
Only one special exhibit was open during my visit, focusing on textiles and abstraction, primarily by women artists. As someone who loves patterns and textures, I found it especially engaging.
We spent about 2.5 hours exploring the gallery, and I’d definitely recommend getting your tickets online to save a bit of money. Overall, it’s a must-visit for anyone who...
Read moreWe visited this amazing gallery today with high hopes of being able to show this incredible and unique art to our daughter (who’s 8) as part of the 3-Day Ottawa Museums Pass we purchased to use during the March Break.
The gallery and art itself is unique and awe inspiring, however, the staff and some other patrons/atmosphere at this facility are the reason for this poor review.
It started at the ticket counter where it seemed I was being belittled by the staff for stating we were three ticket holders and not four people total (as our infant son was also with us). There almost seemed to be a correction to my French as well as being a francophone from Northern Ontario.
As I left my wife and children for a few moments (I had to move my truck due to the 2-hour street parking bylaw), my wife then told me a security guard had approached her right after I left about our daughter pushing our son’s stroller, and told her that wasn’t allowed for any kids under 12, all while standing in front and blocking the path of the stroller. He then proceeded to continue to follow them around for the next ten minutes very closely. After getting a few stares from patrons for having our infant son (who was quiet and attentive, and not a distraction or crying/screaming), my wife and children left the facility.
I’m so very disappointed in this first experience for myself and my family. Being sold on this experience being part of a package that to me seemed family oriented, we left feeling that this was not a family friendly experience...
Read moreLocated in a beautiful spot in the city, the National Gallery of Canada is a must-visit destination for everyone. The moment you arrive, you're greeted by the iconic spider statue, "Maman," which sets the tone for the remarkable experience that awaits inside.
Upon entering, you purchase your ticket and make your way up a scenic hill to the main galleries. The architecture of the building itself is stunning, seamlessly blending with the magnificent works of art it houses. As you tour the gallery, you are surrounded by an incredible array of artworks that span various periods and styles.
One of my favorite aspects of the National Gallery is the extensive collection of works by Cornelius Krieghoff, a renowned artist whose pieces are both captivating and historically significant. Additionally, the gallery proudly features a diverse range of Indigenous art, offering a deep and respectful insight into Canada's rich cultural heritage.
Each exhibit is thoughtfully curated, and the overall atmosphere of the gallery encourages contemplation and admiration. The combination of world-class art and architectural beauty makes for a truly enriching experience.
I am deeply appreciative of the efforts made by the authorities to maintain and present such a wonderful collection. If you find yourself in Ottawa, the National Gallery of Canada should be at the top of your list. Highly recommended for art lovers and anyone looking to immerse themselves in a cultural and...
