More a review of the north pole express than the museum though I suppose to some extent valid for both. Certainly very pretty from the outside currently and with some lovely Xmas decorations generally including an impressive Christmas tree so that's definitely an upside. Caboose journey is fine - obviously short but I suppose the track that's available is what's available and there's not much you can do about that. I think it's a shame they don't make any effort with the cars themselves to appear Christmassy a missed opportunity I think. $15 per person is a very ambitious price tag though not unexpected admittedly - but I think overall some more thought and organization could probably go into it to make it better without much more effort or expense from them. Tbf there's a Santa Claus and some other stuff in another carriage that because my son is too young to really care about yet we couldn't take advantage of so for parents of slightly older children might be a better experience I think. Beyond that there's not that much to see really so having one of the other cars which seems to have been preserved for the public to look in being locked seems odd- why!? Perhaps there's a good reason but Who knows there was no sign or anything just a stairway up to a lighted up but locked door. Events like this are an opportunity to get people in who probably wouldn't normal have an interest in railway history so small things like that can matter more than they perhaps realise I think. Hot chocolate was $3 I've got no problem with the price in general that's cheap but when you're already paying $15 dollars making a cup donation only I think would give a better impression. Overall it was fine - a pleasant enough way to spend an hour and I expect they rely on days like that to survive so you can sort of understand their capitalistic opportunism and I don't really begrudge them that. However, I think a little bit more effort could be made on their part even If it was just a couple of small things. Our family all said they probably wouldn't return for the event again but I like trains as does my son as much as he can understand them anyway so I'd give it a go on a normal day when it was quieter and the normal price which I think is about half the event price. There's perhaps more to look at than I realized because of the crowds.

I recently attended the Train Fest in Smiths Falls, and it was a truly enjoyable experience. The Railway Museum is fantastic—I had visited it a year ago, and it was great to see it come to life during this event. The festival was very well-organized, and the volunteers in the telegraph room were real enthusiasts and experts. My children and I spent some time talking with them, especially with the telegraph operator Graeme, and we were captivated by their passion and knowledge. Special thanks to Graeme for the fascinating conversation! The Lego City display was amazing! We were in awe of the dedication and creativity of the fans who built those expansive railways and cityscapes. The outdoor zones offered a variety of activities that kept kids of all ages entertained. While the ride on the old train was brief, the atmosphere inside the vintage wagon was surreal, transporting us back in time. I’m grateful to all the staff and volunteers for making this day so memorable. It was a beautiful experience for our whole family!

We took 42 kids aged 5-12 from our Summer Camp here and everyone was engaged the entire time (adults included!). We had the opportunity to visit the telegraph office where we were shown old phones, learned about Morse code and how scheduling used to happen, everyone got to make a Morse code bracelet with their initials as well. We had a tour of the dental car (super interesting!!), the train plow, and Nolan’s Corner’s old train station with a wood stove inside. We had a train ride around the grounds as well as iced tea and cookies in an old dining car! The day ended with a scavenger hunt. There was a great shaded open space with picnic tables to eat and a Lego table and train toys to play with. Every single person on staff was so kind, personable and helpful. I will definitely take more classes and camps back as well as my own family!!

Drove from Niagara to visit Smiths Falls and this museum. It was pretty cool for us. Some rare and old cars. Dental car & dining car interesting, rare wooden boxcars 100+ years old. A lot of really cool paintings and artwork of trains and history books. They had a couple encased G scale models. They also sell cool pins and insulators in the gift shop. We stayed in the airbnb which came with a tour and I think its worth getting a tour, it's pretty fun. Sonam did our tour, he was very knowledgeable. Majority of the staff/tour guides when I was there are history/tourism students. Overall pleasant experience and there's a CP yard a couple blocks away at the other old train station that they do crew changes where you can take photos.

Stayed overnight in the caboose in late May 2019. Worked really well for a bike tour through the Rideau Highlands. The Cataraqui Trail (abandoned rail line) is about a kilometer away. A small glitch over breakfast was managed very gracefully. Seems there is a very active team of volunteers - check out their facebook page for almost daily updates! Very much enjoyed the enthusiastic tour of the station and yard. From inside the ticket office they could control the yard arms outside that would instruct the train to slow down, or to stop. Smith Falls had six tracks coming into town back in the 1930's and this museum captures some of the craziness that must have been. Lotsa displays to read, and cars to clamber aboard.
