Lovely little village at 3h30 away from Medellín. I went with my family by car and the landscape it's beautiful. But I know there are some agencies that offer the day trip by bus departing from the city center and including the lunch at El Peñol, and the price per person is around 70 mil pesos colombianos (more or less 25 US dollars per person) which is fair. The tours do not includ the entrance to climb the "piedra del peñol" which is 18 mil pesos colombianos por persona (7 US dollars per person).
All types of green mountains and trees contrasting the blue sky dotted with white clouds accompained us all the way. What to do? Go to the "piedra del peñol" and climb it, the view is totally worth it. Do it as first thing in the morning because after 11 a.m. it becomes crowded. there are 650 steps to climb, so take it slowly. There is no elevator, so if you go with your parents and grand parents, be careful because it can be tough for them to climb and then go back Go to Guatapé and walk all the streets, they are amazing. The "zocalos" - which is the bottom part of a facada's house - are very picturesque. Walk the pier Eat in any restaurant. I recommend one that is in front of the cenral church. However, go with cash because in many restaurants is not accept...

As you ascend, the view becomes increasingly mesmerizing, with every turn offering a new perspective of the sprawling landscape below. From the top, the vista is nothing short of spectacular, with the shimmering waters of the Guatapé Reservoir stretching out as far as the eye can see, framed by verdant hills and quaint villages.

Read moreLa Piedra del Peñol is a must-see when visiting Guatapé, offering a challenging yet rewarding 708-step climb that leads to breathtaking panoramic views of the town, mountains, and man-made reservoir.
The hike is manageable even for those not in peak shape -just take your time and be prepared to sweat, the cool breeze at the top makes it worth the effort. I recommend wearing comfortable clothes and footwear and bringing sunscreen. Arriving early is key to avoiding crowds, as the stairs and parking lot get busier later in the day. The entrance fee is 25,000 COP (around $6 USD) and can only be paid in cash pesos.
At the summit, you'll find souvenir shops and a snack bar offering drinks, snacks, and fruit. The spacious viewing platform also features beautiful murals. For convenience, joining a tour is a good option since the location is somewhat remote. However, if you prefer to spend more time exploring, traveling on your own may be a better choice. At the base, there are plenty more souvenir shops and more substantial dining options.
Overall, this once-in-a-lifetime experience is well worth the effort for the...
