Hotels are meant to be a relaxing reprieve, but with strict, abnormal regulations that impacted our experience, the springs and restaurants closing earlier than most in the area, and the lack of staff friendliness, we wouldn't choose this hotel again or recommend to anyone.
La Fortuna is a secluded area - you can't step outside the hotel doors and find restaurants, bars, or public areas to gather. Hotels are also on the smaller side - it's unlikely you'll be able to get multiple rooms at the same hotel.
Our 18 friends and family members stayed in (3) different La Fortuna hotels. We planned to make ours, The Royal Corin, the central meet-up for shuttle pick ups.
However, our loved ones were usually denied access into the hotel's lobby or Front Drive, due to a No Outside Guests policy. This made transportation for 18 people even more (unnecessarily) complicated than it already was. And we weren't causing trouble, or looking like people who would. My husband's sweet, Tica mom was denied multiple times.
This was actually the first time some of our loved ones met each other. The only time we were all together was at check-in. Despite this, the hotel treated us as a group, denying a late check-out to all but one of the rooms. They asked my mom about the status of our friend's room - which she had no idea about, and should never be expected to. The Royal Corin demanded our friends and family move all luggage to our honeymoon suite - which was also not ready to be seen (by my mother especially) and felt violating. With our friends staying not knowing our family members, and each group having different plans for the day, this added an unexpected level of stress.
Worst of all, the anniversary of our friend's mother's passing fell over our arrival date at The Royal Corin. It was an especially difficult day for him. We planned a private, lowkey night of dinner and reflecting on his memories of her. By the time the lengthy check-in concluded (that never mentioned the guests policy), the restaurants were about to close, so we ordered room service to avoid inconveniencing the employees. However, our friend was told he wasn't allowed up to our room. When we came to retrieve him, we were told that even the guest in the room couldn't allow anyone up unless they were staying at the hotel.
Their only accommodation was for us to sit at the bar, where the bartender was obviously not happy about our presence (and I don't blame him - all of us are from the hospitality industry and know how terrible it is to get seated in the final minute). It made it uncomfortable for our friend to read the tribute he wrote for his mom, and he ended up never doing it. To top things off, our room service order was cold. When we asked the bartender to reheat the steak we ordered, he microwaved it and turned a medium-rare steak into a well-done one. Considering we paid thousands to stay a couple of nights, this was not what we anticipated.
After the first night, we ended up spending most of our time next door at El Silencio, where the springs felt more natural, we were allowed to swim until 11PM without issue, and could play cards together at our...
Read moreI cannot say enough about how amazing our experience was staying at the Royal Corin hotel. Everything was top notch and I cannot recommend this property enough.
While planning my vacation, I was torn between a number of hotels in the La Fortuna / Arenal area and I decided on the Royal Corin because of their high ratings and I am so happy I chose this property.
Location: The location is excellent. It is located on a main road a little less than a 10 minute drive from downtown La Fortuna and directly facing the Arenal volcano. The location is nice and quiet outside of the city but close enough to easily go back and forth.
Food: The hotel has a large selection of food offerings at their two restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I only ate breakfast and lunch on the property so I can only comment on those meals - which were good. The cocktails we had by the pool prepared by Pablo were delicious.
Staff: The staff went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had what we needed throughout our entire stay. They always remembered our names and warmly greeted us each time we passed through the lobby. The staff even gave us a small gift for our honeymoon which was unexpected and very sweet.
Cleanliness: The hotel and our room was immaculate in terms of cleanliness. The protocols for maintaining cleanliness and safety during the C-19 era were taken very seriously with temperature checks, sink stations, and mask requirements in public spaces.
Comfort: The hotel was very comfortable. The mattress, blankets, and pillows were so soft it felt like we were sleeping on a cloud. The water pressure and water temperature in the bathroom was great and the shower even had lights!
Facilities: There are three main pools and several thermal hot tubs. We visited during the rainy season so it never felt crowded at the outdoor pool space. The pool area has plenty of chairs to relax on and a swim up bar where you can order drinks and food.
Security: The hotel is very safe and has a security guard and gate at the beginning of the property. We accidentally left our room door open one night, woke up, and no one entered - very safe.
Parking: Free parking onsite

Read moreWe stayed at this remarkable hotel in November 2023, and it was truly an amazing experience. Our journey from the capital, which involved a three-hour drive, turned out to be unexpectedly enjoyable. Upon arrival, the check-in process was unlike any other we've encountered. We were seated on the couch, offered refreshing cool towels, and greeted with freshly squeezed juice. This unique and welcoming check-in set the stage for the relaxation that awaited us.
The staff here surpassed any expectations we had. Jesslyn and Ricardo were absolutely fantastic. They were incredibly attentive; their thoughtfulness even extended to noticing my partner's birthday and surprising us with delicious chocolate-covered strawberries. Throughout our stay, they engaged with us, offering valuable dining and excursion suggestions.
The rooms were impeccably clean, and it seemed every room boasted a picturesque view of the volcano. The showers were exceptional, featuring three settings and excellent water pressure. Our room's AC worked perfectly, and the TV offered a wide array of options.
The hotel itself maintained an impressive level of cleanliness. The lobby provided ample seating and a welcoming bar. The thermal pools, surrounded by stunning trees and nature, were larger and quieter than anticipated. The regular pools were spacious, complete with a convenient swim-up bar, and abundant outdoor seating. Additionally, there were two clean and pleasant saunas located behind the thermal pools.
The breakfast experience was outstanding. The variety was endless, from various bread and sweet options to an omelette station, yogurt bar with numerous toppings, assorted juices, cheeses, and meats. The ever-changing dishes each day were a nice touch. The poached eggs on tortillas were particularly delicious, and the selection of seven different hot sauces was a delightful surprise, all equally tasty.
We indulged in a spa treatment, and words can't express how relaxing it was. Highly recommended. The spa featured three thermal pools, saunas, a high-pressure water treatment, and two more pristine saunas, each emitting a delightful...
