This tower was originally built in the medieval period and served as a gateway into the fortified city. In the 17th century, the tower was extended, and a clock was installed, earning it the name Clock Tower. After the 1750 earthquake, the city was reconstructed with the support of Empress Maria Theresa, during which the tower was also restored. The entrance is adorned with Baroque elements, which were added in the late 18th century. Above the entrance are busts of Habsburg emperors Leopold I and Charles VI, reflecting the city’s historical ties to the Austrian Empire. Questa torre venne costruita nel XIII secolo, nel 1750 a causa di un terremoto molto grande fu quasi tutta distrutta che fu subito ricostruita, mentre la cupola ottagonale risale ai primi del 1800. Sopra la cupola si trova un’aquila bicipite con ambo le teste rivolte a sinistra che simboleggia lo stemma concesso nel 1659 dall’imperatore Leopoldo I di Asburgo alla città di Rijeka. Quest’aquila fu tolta nel 1949 e poi venne ricollocato una copia più leggera nel 2017. Sopra l’arco d’ingresso si possono ammirare i busti degli imperatori Leopoldo I con Carlo VI l’aquila e il bellissimo orologio. Questa torre con il suo arco era l’ingresso principale delle città vecchie che porta alla Piazza delle Erbe. La città di Rijeka è molto interessante da visitare, facendo un percorso turistico si possono ammirare parecchie chiese, il piccolo castello di Trsat vicino alla basilica della Madonna che dominano la città, il Mololongo che è lungo circa 3 Km, la cattedrale di San Vito, la sinagoga ortodossa il Palazzo del Governo che al suo interno ospita un museo molto bello e interessante e tante altre attrazioni turistiche. Anche se sembra una città vecchia è sempre consigliabile fermarsi a visitarla che sicuramente ne vale la pena.

This tower was built in the 13th century, in 1750 due to a very large earthquake it was almost all destroyed which was immediately rebuilt, while the octagonal dome dates back to the early 1800s. Above the dome there is a double-headed eagle with both heads turned to the left which symbolizes the coat of arms granted in 1659 by the emperor Leopold I of Habsburg to the city of Rijeka. This eagle was removed in 1949 and then a lighter copy was relocated in 2017. Above the entrance arch you can admire the busts of the emperors Leopold I with Charles VI the eagle and the beautiful clock. This tower with its arch was the main entrance to the old cities leading to Piazza delle Erbe. The city of Rijeka is very interesting to visit, making a tourist route you can admire several churches, the small castle of Trsat near the Basilica of the Madonna that dominate the city, the Mololongo which is about 3 km long, the cathedral of San Vito, the Orthodox synagogue, the Palazzo del Governo, which houses a very beautiful and interesting museum and many other tourist attractions. Read moreI had a wonderful day here last month in the middle of December. It was a little bit cold out but I was prepared for it. Coming from Las Vegas, I'm obviously not used to this type of weather. It was a great day walking around with my dear buddy Alen window shopping and drinking esppreso. I love it here so much. So many things to see and do, anytime of the year. Rijeka is simply a beautiful place. I'm happy I came back after 4 years since my last visit. This was my 4th time here. Hope to be back again soon.
