Arabahmet Mosque

The Arabahmet mosque is at the northern end of Salahi Sevket Street (Victoria St) in the Arabahmet area of north Nicosia. It was probably built in the late 16th century, and is named after one of the commanders of the 1571 Ottoman expedition, Arab Ahmet Pasha, who was the Governor General of Rhodes. Built in the Anatolian style of dome on square, it is only one of two examples in Cyprus, the other being at Lapta. Arap Ahmet Paşa Cami Lefkoşa’nın Arap Ahmet mahallesinde bulunan bir camidir. Osmanlı döneminden kalmış bir tarihi eser olan bu cami ismini adından da anlaşılacağı gibi Arap Ahmet Paşa’dan almıştır.

Arap Ahmet kimdir?

Kıbrıs’ın fethine katılan Kıbrıs’ın Beylerbeyidir ve aynı zamanda ilk vakıf kurucularından birisidir. Arap Ahmet Paşa Camii 16. yy ve 17. yy tarihleri arasında inşa edilmiştir. Ortaçağa ait bir katedral alanına yapılmıştır. 19 yy’da yeninden onarım görüldüğü yazılı kaynaklara kayıt edilmiştir. Ortaçağa ait 25 mezar taşı ile tabanı yapılmıştır. Bu mezar taşlarının üstüde ahşap bir döşeme ile kapatılmıştır. Camin 1992- 1996 yılları arasında tamiratı sırasında bu taşlar tarihi eser değeri taşıdığı için sökülmüştür. Şuan günümüzde Lefkoşa Taş Eserler müzesinde sergilenmektedir.

Anadolu camilerinin geleneksel plan şemasına göre inşa edilen bu cami Lefkoşa’da bu standartlara uyan tek camidir. Osmanlı döneminde Arap Paşa mahallesine üst düzey kamu yöneticiler, valiler, paşalar, varlıklı kişiler sık sık ikamet ve ziyaret etmekteydi. Bu sebeple bu mahalleye gösterişli bir cami yapılması gerektiği düşüncesiyle yapıldığı tahmin edilmektedir.

Kesme taştan yapılmıştır. Caminin enine dikdörtgen bir şekilde cemaat saf tutmaktadır. Mihrabı mermerden yapılmıştır. Mukarnas örgü motifine benzeyen üç taraflı silme ile kaplıdır.
