Venetian Column — Attraction in Lefkoşa Türk Belediyesi

In the centre of Ataturk square is the Venetian Column. This was moved from its original spot in 1489 from Salamis to Nicosia as a tribute to Venetian rule in Cyprus. Consequently, the column is frequently and incorrectly attributed to the Venetians. On top of the granite column was the lion of St Mark, at the bottom, the coats of arms of noble Venation families. The Ottomans removed the lion and toppled the column in 1570 and left it in the courtyard of the Sarayonu Mosque. In 1915, while at war with the Ottoman empire, the column was re-erected by the British. Atatürk Meydanı’ndaki Venedik Sütunu (Dikilitaş) Venedikliler tarafından 1550’de dikilmiştir. Eskiden üzerinde St. Mark aslanı bulunuyordu. Osmanlılar sütunu kaldırarak Sarayönü Camisinin avlusuna koymuşlardır. İngilizler 1915 yılında, 6 m yüksekliğindeki sütunu şimdiki yerine yerleştirmişlerdir. Tek kurşuni renkte bir granit olan sütunun, Salamis’teki bir mabetten getirildiği sanılmaktadır. Sütunun alt tarafında 6 İtalyan ailesinin armaları bulunmaktadır. Sütunun üzerindeki bakır küre sonradan ilave edilmiştir. Atatürk Meydanının batısındaki binalar (Devlet Daireleri) 1900’lerin ilk yıllarında İngiliz Koloni devrinde inşa edildiklerinden özel bir görünüme sahiptirler. Binaların doğuya bakan yönünde bir çeşme vardır. Ayrıca Kraliçe Elizabet’in 1953 yılında tahta çıkması nedeniyle inşa edilen bir platform bulunmaktadır.
