Located off Parque San Sebastián in Cuenca's historic center, the modern art museum features immersive art work by South American artists.

Historically, the beautiful white building has been home to a recovery center for alcoholics, a male prison, an assisted living facility, and a foundation for impoverished mothers. The museum was inaugurated in 1981.

Although I had seen a $2 entrance mentioned online somewhere, I was only asked to sign the registry (without charge) at the entrance. I visited on a Friday morning and there was a preschool group visiting as well as a handful of individuals wandering on their own. Apart from a museum brochure, all information about the art was in Spanish.

Small exhibitions, including textile sculpture, video, audio, photography, and painting can be found in rooms surrounding open-air courtyards. It's a very nice atmosphere. Many of the works had a focus on environmental justice and awareness.

The museum appears to be open Monday through Saturday from 9am-1:30pm with additional hours from 3-6:30pm on week days.

A delightful free experience in the center of Cuenca. Sign in and give your passport number. A guide offered and declined. The gardens lovely, birds were happily singing in the mist. At least 19th century, the style was colonial with simplicity. A former hospital? Many small galleries showing local artists. The reaccuring theme was loss of heritage and culture. The art amazing. High quality. Human spirit realized in...
