We were very disappointed with our visit. It coincided with a guided talk to French visitors. We were not told about the talk at the reception desk. When it started we were offered (or fended off, we felt) with the opportunity to watch a film in English. We declined as our party consisted of a retired and a current museum curator who prefer to look at objects. We also had two boys under the age of eight in our party, the eldest very interested in D Day especially as we live in Gosport, a town with a significant link to D Day, and where some of the Mulberry harbours were built. We had already visited the D Day Museum in Bayeux where we were made to feel welcome and where we had free rein to explain the significance of D DAY to the boys. At Arromanche we were actually told to be quiet because the talk was in progress. As a retired curator I have on several occasions given talks around a museum and, on those occasions, I have always apologised to the other visitors for the intrusion and would never have told them to be quiet. The Museum at Arromanches is small and we had to wait a long time until the talk was over to see an important part of the displays. The Museum also needs a lot of attention and updating and, in the opinion of our party, is expensive at almost 8 Euros per adult. If the staff had been more welcoming and we hadn't been told to be quiet we might have had a better opinion of the visit. It's hard to be appreciative when...

A Must-Visit: The D-Day Museum in Bayeux The D-Day Museum in Bayeux is a poignant and informative tribute to the historic events of June 6, 1944. Nestled in the heart of Normandy, this museum offers a comprehensive look at the D-Day landings and the subsequent Battle of Normandy.

Highlights of the museum include:

Interactive exhibits: Learn about the planning, execution, and aftermath of D-Day through interactive displays and multimedia presentations. Historical artifacts: See firsthand accounts of the invasion through personal belongings, weapons, and military equipment. Moving film: Watch a powerful film that brings the events of D-Day to life. Outdoor exhibits: Explore the museum's outdoor exhibits, featuring tanks, vehicles, and artillery pieces used during the conflict. A visit to the D-Day Museum is a truly humbling experience. It provides a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by soldiers from around the world. Whether you're a history buff or simply looking for a meaningful visit, this museum is a must-see...

When doing the memorial rounds this place Arromanche is the jewel in the crown. To think they took this place and then built a complete harbour in a month! They could load 750 truck's in a day, how amazing is that. There are still parts of the harbour wall visible and the entrance to the then harbour had two main pillars. One named Roosevelt the other named Churchill, unfortunately Roosevelt has gone but Churchill is still standing. These two mighty pillars had massive gun turrets on them which have also gone. But the site just leaves you to imagine how it must have been. The village is beautiful, lovely to walk round, go to the museum which is right on the front. 18 euros for two adults, not very big mind you but well worth it as they provide a guided tour which explains everything. They have films of the actual D Day landings you can watch and lots of exhibits. Great place to have coffee or lunch or just sit. We spent the whole day there as the place is...

We had 2 nights in Arromanches, dedicating a day to soaking up the incredible history of this lovely seaside village. The musuem kickstarted our day and our tour of Normandy, which I would highly recommend as it provides a first class insight to the scale of the D Day operations. We spent over 2 hours here and I could easily have spent a further hour taking in the details of the exhibits. The layout is superb and includes a fabulous rooftop viewing platform for unrivalled views of the Gold beach and the remnants of the incredible Mulbery B harbour. A real highlight of our visit.

Excellent museum which showcases the amazing maritime engineering feat which was the Mulberry harbours (A and B) built at Arromanches (and a second at one of the US D-Day beaches). The scale and ingenuity are immense, and (of course) you can still see what remains eighty years later right out of the windows. You’ll also see sections of the bridges and connectors around the local area as you arrive and leave. When you’re visiting the beaches, don’t miss this explanation of this keystone that made the invasion possible, and such a success.

This museum is an absolute must-visit. I went in with my fairly basic knowledge of the events of D-Day, and came out with a much better understanding than I had ever expected. The museum is full of projections, models, and artefacts that give clear but still highly detailed accounts of the events before, on, and after D-Day, on all five beaches. I really highly recommend this excellent museum.
