We were very disappointed with our visit. It coincided with a guided talk to French visitors. We were not told about the talk at the reception desk. When it started we were offered (or fended off, we felt) with the opportunity to watch a film in English. We declined as our party consisted of a retired and a current museum curator who prefer to look at objects. We also had two boys under the age of eight in our party, the eldest very interested in D Day especially as we live in Gosport, a town with a significant link to D Day, and where some of the Mulberry harbours were built. We had already visited the D Day Museum in Bayeux where we were made to feel welcome and where we had free rein to explain the significance of D DAY to the boys. At Arromanche we were actually told to be quiet because the talk was in progress. As a retired curator I have on several occasions given talks around a museum and, on those occasions, I have always apologised to the other visitors for the intrusion and would never have told them to be quiet. The Museum at Arromanches is small and we had to wait a long time until the talk was over to see an important part of the displays. The Museum also needs a lot of attention and updating and, in the opinion of our party, is expensive at almost 8 Euros per adult. If the staff had been more welcoming and we hadn't been told to be quiet we might have had a better opinion of the visit. It's hard to be appreciative when...

Read moreWhen doing the memorial rounds this place Arromanche is the jewel in the crown. To think they took this place and then built a complete harbour in a month! They could load 750 truck's in a day, how amazing is that. There are still parts of the harbour wall visible and the entrance to the then harbour had two main pillars. One named Roosevelt the other named Churchill, unfortunately Roosevelt has gone but Churchill is still standing. These two mighty pillars had massive gun turrets on them which have also gone. But the site just leaves you to imagine how it must have been. The village is beautiful, lovely to walk round, go to the museum which is right on the front. 18 euros for two adults, not very big mind you but well worth it as they provide a guided tour which explains everything. They have films of the actual D Day landings you can watch and lots of exhibits. Great place to have coffee or lunch or just sit. We spent the whole day there as the place is...
