Magnificent monument of BORDEAUX. Its current name comes from two ancient misinterpretations. In the Middle Ages, it was considered that the Palacium Galiane housed the remains of a palace that Charlemagne had built for his legendary concubine Galiène. This legend was abandoned at the end of the 16th century in favour of a more historical reality. The ruins are rightly identified with that of an ancient amphitheatre, but they are then wrongly associated with Gallian, emperor of the 250/260 AD. Despite the good state of conservation of the monument - some parts of the peripheral wall are preserved to a height of almost 20 m - the history of this amphitheatre remains poorly known. Usually dated around 200 AD, at a time when it was long assumed that Burdigala would become the capital of the Roman province of Aquitaine, its construction could in fact be older. The excavations in 2010 suggest that it may date back to the first half of the 2nd century AD. Located on the edge of the ancient city, it was used as an arena for gladiatorial battles. Approximately 132 m long and 110 m wide, it could accommodate some 22,000 spectators, with...

The name 'Palais Gallien is a mystery stolen from history, For it was neither a palace nor was it home to Emperor Gallienus. Instead it was the amphitheater of Roman Burdigala - the city's Coliseum. Some 15,000 people would regularly squeeze into it. to cheer on the gladiators as they wrestled with wild beasts. But at the and of the 3rd century the curtain of oblivion came clown. with brick and rubble stone taking over. Farmarly believed to date from the Severan dynasty (193 235 AD) it is now thought to have been built during the first century in the vear...

Really good monument. The archeological remains on this Roman arena are well worth a visit. On the one hand, I was slightly underwhelmed when I saw it at first. I had gotten a slightly different impression of what it was from what I had read about it - and by this I mean that much less of the original building remained than I had expected. But that is what happens, unfortunately. there are two main viewing points and they have a good amount of information. They even have a map where they show how big the arena used to big - impressive

NICE BUT NOT MUCH TO IT You can visit this ruin from two streets, though those two streets aren't at all interconnected (you have to walk around). You can see it from the street level, but you can't walk around the ruins yourself. It's an interesting piece of Roman history, but you won't be here any more than 5 minutes, as there's not much more to see other than what you see in the pictures.

What a find! As someone who has visited a lot of Roman sites in Europe, this one was easy to find and the history around the area, including why there is so little left was worth the walk. We approached it from two different streets and spent some time discussing the way that the area would have looked and how large the amphitheatre would have been.
