In the 1960s, St. Tropez, a small fishing village on the French Riviera, transformed into one of the most glamorous and fashionable destinations in the world. The town, with its stunning Mediterranean coastline, had long been a haven for artists and intellectuals, but the 1960s saw it rise to prominence as the playground for the rich, famous, and stylish. This shift in St. Tropez’s image can largely be attributed to the French actress Brigitte Bardot, who, after filming And God Created Woman in 1956, made the town her personal retreat. Bardot’s presence attracted a wave of attention, drawing celebrities, artists, and wealthy vacationers from around the world.

The allure of St. Tropez in the 1960s lay in its blend of bohemian freedom and opulence. It became synonymous with a carefree lifestyle, where beach parties, luxurious yachts, and the jet set culture flourished. The beaches of Pampelonne, with their golden sands and azure waters, became the backdrop for a new wave of leisure and indulgence. The scene was vibrant with young, fashionable people lounging in the sun, engaging in lively conversations, and dancing the night away at famed clubs like Le Club 55.

Yet, beneath the glamour, St. Tropez maintained its quaint charm. The narrow streets of the old town, the bustling harbor lined with fishing boats and luxury yachts, and the local markets preserved the authenticity of the village. Artists still found inspiration there, painting the serene beauty of the coastline and the lively energy of the summer crowds. St. Tropez of the 1960s was a place where old-world charm met modern hedonism, creating an iconic symbol of French Riviera luxury and allure that continues to captivate visitors...

Saint-Tropez is a glamorous coastal town on the French Riviera, known for its beautiful beaches, historic charm, and luxurious lifestyle. Once a small fishing village, Saint-Tropez became famous in the mid-20th century, thanks to celebrities and artists drawn to its scenic beauty and unique atmosphere. The town’s history dates back to the Roman era, and it has a rich cultural heritage, evident in its architecture and landmarks.

If you’re visiting, start with Vieux Port (Old Port), where you can admire luxury yachts alongside traditional fishing boats. The colorful waterfront is lined with cafes and restaurants, perfect for soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Don’t miss La Ponche, the historic old quarter that showcases the original charm of Saint-Tropez with narrow, winding streets and quaint buildings. Another must-visit is the Citadel of Saint-Tropez, a fortress offering panoramic views of the town and sea, along with a maritime museum that highlights the area’s seafaring history. Finally, take some time to relax on Pampelonne Beach, known for its clear waters and upscale beach clubs, making it a quintessential Saint-Tropez experience. This town perfectly combines historical allure with modern luxury, making it a memorable destination on the...

There's a lot of hype about the Côte d'Azur but the reality is that the place merits most of it.

I wouldn't want to liken it too much to a theme park but when you come to somewhere like St Tropez it feels as if the surroundings have been very carefully crafted and manicured to deliver the final product to the tourist.

Ostentatious wealth aside, and yes there is a lot of it, the combination of hot sun, sea, sand and picture postcard setting can make you feel truly euphoric after a long, dark, cold winter in Scotland. Add a glass or two and the world is free of cares.

We toured the town and will go back a second time today (12th of July) for a final look.

We found a nice wee pub on the harbourside, Kelly's (my surname so how could I pass without popping in?) and sipped a couple of cold beers in the early afternoon heat. Lovely.

We took a walk along the pier and it gave us some good views of the town as well as some of the fabulous boats dotted around the bay.

Enjoy the visit. Admire the beauty. Soak up the experience. It will be something to think fondly about when Winter settles in once again.

Aye
