A small beach, very close to the tourist area of Agios Nikolaos
Pros:
The water is very clear and great for snorkeling (though not always — I’ll come back to this point below).
The beach is right on the edge of the city, so you don’t need to drive.
There are no big waves, not even when it’s windy and swimming becomes difficult on the open beaches.
The area is full of restaurants and bars (which can also be a disadvantage).
The view is beautiful, and an evening walk here is very pleasant — especially to admire the moonrise.
Cons:
Sometimes the water is full of plastic particles (probably brought in by sea currents). It’s a problem that affects the whole region — even the famous Voulisma Beach is covered with plastic debris.
The beach is almost completely taken up by sunbeds, and the prices are quite high (higher than at the nicer beaches outside the city).
If you arrive too late, you won’t find any free sunbeds, and there’s not much space left to lay your towel. Besides, the ground isn’t sandy but a mix of dirt and pebbles, which is quite uncomfortable.
The water gets deep very quickly, even close to the shore. This isn’t a problem for confident swimmers, but it can be for others.
The abundance of restaurants and bars, although convenient, was actually a bit stressful for me. I don’t enjoy swimming while being watched by people eating and drinking on the shore; I felt like I was on safari, only I wasn’t the visitor.
During peak hours, walking along the shore can be difficult due to the crowds of tourists, especially near some very popular restaurants where queues...
Read moreI loved this place. It's a pebbly beach so not a good place if you want lots of soft sand, but the swimming here is amazing. It's a narrow inlet of beautifully clear water that gets deep rapidly beyond a few meters in. The sunbeds are €3 and the parasols are also €3. People arrive early to pay and reserve them for the whole day. You can find a few shaded areas near the roadside for free but people snap these up earlier still. There are plenty of nearby cafes to get drinks and food from though it can be cheaper to bring your own from a shop which is...
Read moreA peble beach right in the heart of Agios Nikolaos. There is sand but not in the line of water. It lioks like it has been brought in. The sunbeds lie on the sand but if you go to swim, there are bebbles. Easy to access water, gets rather deep soon but late enough to allow comfortable access. Sunbeds cost 5€ per day. A girl collects the money at some point. Cash or card accepted. Sunbeds are marked with restaurant names. That restaurant serves...
