This is a very special place, soaked in ancient history. It was the Roman market place of Thessaloniki and it is thought to be sited where an ancient Greek version had previously stood. The Roman forum dates from the 2nd century AD and is thought to have operated for about 400 years, well after the demise of the Empire. The site allows you to quickly lose yourself in the past while it takes you back to the times of Roman dominance of large parts of the known world. Your entrance into the site gives you an immediate feeling that this has a very important place in history, from both a local and indeed wider perspective. The first thing to do is to visit the underground museum which is on the far side of the Forum. to reach it you walk through the partially-underground walkway, known as the Roman “Cryptoporticus” arcade, which was the equivalent of a Roman underground shopping mall and is itself really interesting. The detailed description of the "mall", given in the museum, makes you realise just how advanced the Roman civilisation had become as it transports you back to those times. . After you go through the very informative museum, you start to really piece together the site's significance and finally you are drawn back outside to the forum again where you can better picture just how it must have looked and how it would have felt to have wandered through the forum in centuries gone by. The site is truly magnificent and even includes a theatre which was used for gladiatorial games. The museum could perhaps be laid out a bit better to make it easier to follow all it has to offer but don't let that put you off... It is well worth...
Read moreFor three centuries, the agora or forum was the administrative centre of the capital city. It was designed as a unified complex on a site where, in the 1st c. BC, there had been a few private houses and scattered temporary workshop installations. In the 1st c. AD a first agora began to be built in the area. A large, rectangular hall in the middle of the east wing served the needs of the bouleuterion (council-house). However, the organisation of the forum complex, in the form in which it has come to light, began around the middle of the 2nd c. AD and is obviously linked to the love of Hadrian and his successors for the achievements of the Greek spirit on the one hand, and to the drastic rise in the population of the city and the pressing need for a larger administrative centre on the other.
The forum complex also boasts two Roman baths, one of which has been excavated while the other is buried underneath the city, and a small theater which was also used for gladiatorial games. Although the initial complex was not built in Roman times, it was largely refurbished in the 2nd century. It is believed that the forum and the theater continued to be used until at least the 6th century.
The area of the forum was planned to be the site of the Thessaloniki Municipal Courthouse , but after the ruins were discovered during the excavation, the project...
Read moreA great sightseeing and archaeological site located right in the city center, between the famous Via Egnatia and St. Demetrius Church. Unfortunately, for the Greek antiquity enthusiasts, the site belongs to Roman buildings, but this does not make it less interesting, especially since there is also a very interesting museum in the basement. Interesting as it seemed to me, though a vulgar image, the almost circular construction on the southeast corner of the Agora, which I supposed that is nothing more than a public toilet at that time. We can easily observe two aspects: 1. it is the same as in modern times and 2. it shows the level of civilization of the inhabitants of those times.
