For three centuries, the agora or forum was the administrative centre of the capital city. It was designed as a unified complex on a site where, in the 1st c. BC, there had been a few private houses and scattered temporary workshop installations. In the 1st c. AD a first agora began to be built in the area. A large, rectangular hall in the middle of the east wing served the needs of the bouleuterion (council-house). However, the organisation of the forum complex, in the form in which it has come to light, began around the middle of the 2nd c. AD and is obviously linked to the love of Hadrian and his successors for the achievements of the Greek spirit on the one hand, and to the drastic rise in the population of the city and the pressing need for a larger administrative centre on the other. The forum complex also boasts two Roman baths, one of which has been excavated while the other is buried underneath the city, and a small theater which was also used for gladiatorial games. Although the initial complex was not built in Roman times, it was largely refurbished in the 2nd century. It is believed that the forum and the theater continued to be used until at least the 6th century. The area of the forum was planned to be the site of the Thessaloniki Municipal Courthouse , but after the ruins were discovered during the excavation, the project was scrapped.

A great sightseeing and archaeological site located right in the city center, between the famous Via Egnatia and St. Demetrius Church. Unfortunately, for the Greek antiquity enthusiasts, the site belongs to Roman buildings, but this does not make it less interesting, especially since there is also a very interesting museum in the basement. Interesting as it seemed to me, though a vulgar image, the almost circular construction on the southeast corner of the Agora, which I supposed that is nothing more than a public toilet at that time. We can easily observe two aspects: 1. it is the same as in modern times and 2. it shows the level of civilization of the inhabitants of those times.

The Ancient Agora is one of the most important Roman monuments in Thessaloniki. It is located in the heart of the city between Egnatia Avenue and Agios Dimitrios Avenue, on the north side of Aristotelous Square and south of the Basilica of Agios Dimitrios. The Ancient Agora was the social, economic, administrative, spiritual and religious center of Thessaloniki. It was connected to the two main roads of the city. It was a single area of approximately 20 acres which housed buildings that served various functions in the public life of the city and began to be constructed at the end of the 2nd century AD on the site of the Hellenistic Agora. The findings of the Ancient Agora were brought to light by the archaeological dig in 1966 during the efforts to build the new courthouse of Thessaloniki. They soon highlighted the enormous historical and archaeological value of the area.

I visited this place only at night. I am pretty sure that i would be awesome if i also can visit it during the day. If you see the picture, it looks very wonderful. They put a beautiful lighting to light this ancient place. It is sloghtly far from the city centre, but i tried to pass this place when i walked to have a dinner with some friends and i stopped for several minutes to look at this beautiful site. It is still in the city centre area, but not the main street. There are also some other sites like this, but this is the best, you also still can see the stone path, the columns, some rooms that are separated by stone blocks. It is very interesting and i think you also can get inside during the day because i checked the gate and i think i saw some list. But not sure though. I would recommmend you to check this place when you visit thessaloniki.

Thessaloniki's Roman Forum or Agora is the ancient city center, located at the upper side of Aristotelous Square. It is a large two-terraced forum featuring two-storey stoas, dug up by accident in the 1960s. I strongly recommend everyone in Thessaloniki to visit that part of the city. The main reasons for that are: 1) flee market, which takes the whole street just next to the Rime Forum (i personally dig out silver necklace and earrings in one of the shops) ; 2) The buildings are really LOVELY there and the atmosphere of the neighborhood gives you different perspective on the city of Thessaloniki; 3) The cafes exactly next to the Forum are popular among the locals and you’d be apart with typical tourist stuff as in the city center.
