Our visit to Karamonlegos Winery for the Assyrtiko tasting was a pleasant surprise. As Greeks familiar with Assyrtiko and having visited wineries worldwide, we found this experience uniquely enjoyable.
The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly our host, Giorgos. His friendly demeanor, easy-going nature, and ability to explain the complex wine-making process in an understandable way truly enhanced our experience. Giorgos's personal touch made all the difference, and we're not sure our opinion would be the same without his excellent hosting.
The food served was tasty and the portions were fair. We were introduced to unfamiliar wines and learned about the innovative processes used at Karamonlegos estate, which added an educational element to our tasting.
While the overall experience was excellent, it's worth noting that much of our enjoyment was due to Giorgos's exceptional hosting skills. This personal touch elevates the experience but also means it might vary depending on your host.
If you're looking for a winery visit that combines great wine, good food, and a personable, educational experience, Karamonlegos Winery is definitely worth a visit - especially if you're lucky enough to have Giorgos...
Read morei came here whilst on a private tour of the island. we don’t drink wine, so only ate lunch. my younger sister, a very picky eater, had limited choice as expected however, when we asked for the beef patties to come without the spearmint sauce, we received the plate with the sauce on. our tour guide went to the kitchen to tell them that the plate was ordered with no sauce, to which he was met with “if they didn’t want the sauce they shouldn’t have ordered the dish”. we were not informed that this modification would be an issue, and were actually told that the sauce could be removed. when the plate arrived, half of the meal had been in the sauce so my sister was unable to eat her full meal. everywhere else we have had meals at have had no issues leaving items off her plate, so we were surprised to hear that it was such an issue to them. furthermore, i ordered a plate of tomato pasta and saw that there was caviar on the top, which was not listed on the menu, concerning me as someone could have had an allergy to an...
Read moreAfter going to several of the most recommended wineries we finally made our way to Artemis Karamolegos.
We were amazed by the difference between their wines, which used the same grape varieties and similar methods as other wineries on the island, and the ones we'd previously tried.
These wines tasted more refined, showed more of the qualities of the grapes and remained unique and interesting.
The staff were friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable (They were very helpful when we decided to ship some wine back home, as well).
Finally, the winery itself is small but beautiful. Enclosed under a canopy of fig and olive trees, the outdoor tasting area was cool, shaded, and fragrant. Exactly how one would imagine drinking wine in Santorini to be.
Update: a few years later I've found the nykteri difficult to find in the US. However a few bottles of 2015 nykteri appeared at my local liquor store and I promptly snatched them up. Of all the Santorini wines we had, I prized...
