Just wanted to have a chinwag about Art Space Santorini, a joint that seems to be popular with the tourists and has all the pretences of a top-shelf winery. Truth be told, I had big expectations but ended up as sick as a dog after my experience there.
First things first, the place is as picturesque as a postcard from The Kimberley - no arguments there. But, what I didn't bargain for was the dodgy bottle of red they served me. Fair dinkum, I've had better grog at a footy game.
I ordered their premium red, expecting a drop as smooth as a kookaburra's glide. What I got, however, tasted as if it had been left out in the Outback sun for a few too many arvos. We're talking a blend of half-fermented grapes and stale sunblock - an utter shocker, that's what it was!
Now, I'm not one to chuck a wobbly over a single bad experience, but it was more than just the foul taste that ruined my day. The rotten plonk knocked me around something fierce. I was chundering all night, with a gut-ache like a roo had given me a swift kick in the belly. Talk about a gutser!
I tried to bring it up with the staff, but they were busier than a one-armed bricklayer in Baghdad, barely giving me the time of day. When I finally managed to flag one down, the bloke was about as helpful as an ashtray on a motorbike. His lack of concern was just the rotten cherry on top of an already garbage pavlova.
So, there you go, my fellow Aussie wanderers. If you find yourself in Santorini, do yourself a favour and give Art Space a wide berth. The view might be a ripper, but the service and the wine are as useful as a chocolate teapot. If it's a choice between their vino and drinking from my old Akubra hat, I'll take the...
Read moreFirst things first. If you are considering going here at all, or even if your not, just do it. Stopping here was one of the biggest highlights of our trip to Santorini, and was by far the best wine tasting experience of my life. We had Esmeralda welcome us with a smile and give us a in depth and highly detailed tour of the winery and the history behind it is very interesting and easy to follow. She didn't rush us at all as we looked at the local artwork and once we finished she gave us 8 wines to taste for 5€ as well as a liquor made from the grape skins (I can't remember what it was called). The wines were out of this world, and if you told me otherwise, I'd call you a liar. I usually don't like dry wines, but oh my Lord were they divine. With each wine Esmeralda gave a detailed Description as to how they are made and can certainly describe the taste better than I can. I wasn't planning on taking any wine home out of fear of it breaking in my checked bag, but now it's a risk I'm ready to take. Packaging is solid and safe all things considered. But honestly if you have Esmeralda, she's truly an angel, so be nice to her and you'll have an amazing experience. We took a selfie with her but it's on my friends phone :/ I hope to...
Read moreI WISH I COULD GIVE IT MORE STARS. THE BEST WINERY EXPERIENCE!!
I’ve no words to describe how memorable and lovely the experience was. I’ve been to quite a few wineries but this one will always be one for the books. The primary reason is the owner and the people working here. We had the honor of meeting this beautiful soul and the owner, Mr. Antonio, a 76-year old passionate entrepreneur. His father and ancestors have been in the wine making business. It was amazing to see the pictures there of his family back from the days before is born. Arts Space is neither your regular winery nor commercial; it’s a place driven by passion and creativity with a mix of wine-making and out of the world art pieces (most created by a Greek artist exclusively for Arts Space). The tour continued to be provided by Esmeralda, a lovely lady working with this place for years. She explained the wines very well and even offered us a tasting of an exclusive organic wine which is not a part of the wine tasting. Each of the 7 wines during the tasting were exquisite, I personally fell in love with the...
