It happens often when visiting ruins that the history is more captivating than the site itself. This was my first Mayan ruins so I still have a lot to learn —but from what I understand, we don't know much about the ruins of Copán, but we interpret a lot. It's nice to see but we should make our own research and reading. The guides are doing a great descriptive job with a few information but we know little with certainty. There's also a couple of structures that are missing because they are in museums in the US and England.
Overall, this archeological site lacks of information and explanation which makes the visit on our own quite limited. I recommend getting a PDF online and read it during the visit or to get a guide at extra cost. $20 admission for foreigners and it doesn't include the guide, the museum nor the tunnels. I attach the official price list as of June 2025.
So, I would say it's a must in Honduras and the environment is really beautiful and enjoyable with all the macaws flying all over, but it's not...

As someone who’s traveled the world exploring ancient temples and ruins, I can confidently say that Copán ranks among my top favorites. It’s #6 on my list of the 15 most important ruins to see in Central and South America—and yet, less than 0.0057% of Americans have ever set foot here. That’s just 1 in every 17,600 people. If you’re lucky enough to be one of them, you’ll understand why this place is so special.
Copán is a true hidden gem. The artistry of the stelae, the layout of the acropolis, and the sheer intimacy of the site make it unforgettable. Unlike many ruins that keep you at arm’s length, Copán invites you in—you can climb, explore, and touch the stones that have stood for centuries. It’s immersive in a way that few archaeological sites allow.
If you’re serious about history, culture, or just want to experience something that most travelers miss, Copán is a must. I’ll be recommending it to anyone who values authenticity...
Read moreI had an absolutely incredible time at the Martian ruins in Copan Ruinas! I went around 3:30pm and was one of very few people actually walking around the archaeological site.
The site is a nice walk from town. There’s a sidewalk on the left hand side of the road that leads you through the trees and past a couple Mayan statues. Definitely beats walking along the side of the road.
Make sure to get a ticket at the Park building on your left as you enter the park. Otherwise you’ll need to walk all the way back from the ruins to do so. There wasn’t much in terms of labeling on where to go for what. The tickets for just the ruins were $20 and it was an additional $15 for the tunnels and I believe $10 for the museum (if you’re a foreigner).
Truly I was by myself at points, walking around these ancient ruins which felt other worldly. It was a really cool experience. There were also wild macaws and other animals scurrying around, so keep an eye out if you’re a bird or...
