Se Cathedral, Goa 🕍⛱️ A Glimpse into the Grandeur of 16th Century Portuguese Goa ------ Se Cathedral, located in Old Goa, is one of the largest and most magnificent churches in Asia. This grand structure, dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Churches and Convents of Goa." Its construction began in 1562 under the reign of King Dom Sebastião of Portugal and was completed in 1619, with the cathedral being consecrated in 1640. The cathedral commemorates the Portuguese victory over a Muslim army led by Afonso de Albuquerque on the feast day of St. Catherine, which led to the dedication of the cathedral in her honor. The architectural style is predominantly Portuguese-Manueline, featuring a Tuscan exterior and a Corinthian interior. Notably, the church is built in the form of a Greek cross inside, though it appears rectangular from the outside. One of the unique features of Se Cathedral is the Golden Bell, renowned for its rich tone and being the largest in Goa. The cathedral originally had two towers, but the southern tower collapsed in 1776 and was never rebuilt, adding a touch of historical intrigue to the site. Inside, visitors can marvel at the main altar dedicated to St. Catherine, flanked by stunning old paintings and several intricately carved chapels. The Chapel of the Cross of Miracles, where a vision of Christ is said to have appeared in 1919, adds to the spiritual allure of the cathedral. The adjoining convent has been converted into an archaeological museum, enriching the historical experience. For travelers, Se Cathedral is open every day from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, and there's no entry fee. The best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant. This cathedral is not just a place of worship but a historical treasure trove that offers a glimpse into Goa’s colonial past and architectural grandeur.

It will be better to rent a Scooty or any other vehicle, so you can visit nearby places/ Churches ( like st. Francis of asisi) and save your time. Numerous visitors and pilgrimage reached here during Christmas. In outside earlier two towers are present in cathedral but one of the towers get damaged in 17th century and never rebuilt. Inside the church one magnificent golden layered altar( it is a holy table in a church) is constructed which is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexanderia. Catherine was a Christian saint and a scholar. Who raised her voice against the suppression of Christian minorities. In the right side of main prayer room there is cross of miracle, where it is believed that in 1919 the Jesus's Christ are surprisingly manifest themselves. Entry is free and visiting time is around 7:30 to 6 pm ( Monday to Saturday) and 7:00 to 10pm (Sunday). Try to avoid sleeveless clothes and shorts. Cover your arms and legs with shawl.
