History: Murdeshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is renowned for housing the second tallest statue of Shiva in the world (about 123 feet high). Located in the coastal town of Murdeshwar in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, the temple has a legendary connection to the Ramayana. According to mythology, the temple is built on the spot where Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, tried to carry the Atma Linga (a powerful Shiva Lingam) to Lanka. Lord Ganesha, in disguise, tricked Ravana into placing it on the ground, after which it got fixed. Furious, Ravana threw parts of the Linga in different directions. The main Linga remained in Gokarna, while the covering of the Linga (called Murdeshwar, meaning "Lord of the Cover") landed here. The temple has ancient roots but has been significantly developed in modern times by philanthropists and the R.N. Shetty group, who have helped create the towering statue and a modern complex with tall gopurams and an elevator. Murdeshwar Temple is a blend of spirituality, natural beauty, and architectural grandeur. Pros: The 123-foot Shiva statue overlooking the Arabian Sea is truly majestic, especially during sunrise and sunset. The 20-story Raja Gopuram (entrance tower) has a lift for panoramic views, offering stunning vistas of the sea and surrounding landscapes. The temple is clean, well-maintained, and welcoming to both devotees and tourists. It’s located right by Murdeshwar Beach, making it an excellent mix of pilgrimage and leisure. Cons: It can get very crowded, especially on weekends and during festivals like Maha Shivaratri. Commercialization around the temple may dilute the spiritual atmosphere for some visitors. Being a coastal temple, it may be hot and humid, so hydration and sun protection are important.

Statue of Shiva is mesmerizing. It humbles you with its giant structure. Below the statue of shiva - there are Bhukailas caves where history of Murudeshwar is spoken through a speaker and various sculptures are depicting the scenes. Since one can enter at any point of time and background music is also too high, it's difficult to follow the voiceover of the story. It would've been great had a small write up is put in front of each visual. Also, the voice over seem to be only in English which might not be understandable for sizeable population. Statue on close view appears to be not well maintained. There are areas where there are cracks and dents. Given the divine nature of the place, it would be great to maintain the structures well so that these can be sustained for longer durations. Shiva statue, temple and raaja gopura are at one place and can be covered in one go. There would be entrance fee for four wheelers entering the premises

The world's second-tallest Lord Shiva statue, the town lies on the coast of the Arabian Sea and is also famous for the Murudeshwar Temple. This temple is built on the Kanduka Hill which is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Arabian Sea. It is dedicated to Bhagwan Shiv, and a 20-storied gopura is constructed at the temple. The temple authorities have installed a lift that provides a breath-taking view of the 123-feet Lord Shiva idol from the top of the Raja gopura. Below Lord Shiva statue there is an artificial cave, where you can find magnificent sculpture. These Sculptures narrate the story of Aatmalinga - How Ravana took the AatmaLinga from Lord Shiva and what made him to throw the AatmaLinga. This is narrated by a sound and light show. You can move seeing each of the sculptures and listening to the story. You can enter this cave by paying a small entry fee.

Murudeshwar Temple, located in Karnataka, is a stunning pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva. Famous for its towering 237-ft Raja Gopura and the majestic 123-ft Shiva statue, the temple offers breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea. With deep roots in the Ramayana, the temple is linked to the legend of Ravana and the Atma Linga. The serene atmosphere, intricate architecture, and divine significance make it a must-visit destination for both devotees and tourists. A perfect blend of spirituality and scenic beauty, Murudeshwar is an unforgettable experience. Required below improvements: Beach is very dirty.. we cannot even stay near. Very bad smell. Government has to focus on improving neatness here. One of the worst beach that I have seen so far. Local shops needs to be moved from beach to main road.

According to the Puranas, when Ravana was carrying the Atmalinga given by Lord Shiva from Gokarna to Sri Lanka on foot.Lord Ganesha disguised himself as a scholar and took the Atmalinga from Ravana, placing it on the ground, where it remained. When Ravana tried to lift it, it broke into four pieces and scattered them in four places, forming four Shiva temples, one of which is this Murdeshwar temple. And the Atmalinga placed in that main ground is still worshipped at Malveshwar in Gokarna.I found the place quite beautiful, about thirty of us went to visit here, a huge statue of Lord Mahadev has been installed here. And there is a sea nearby, you can swim here if you want. When we went here, there was a fair nearby where you can get various seafood.
