Palayam Connemara market is one of the old markets in Thiruvanthapuram. The gateway of the market itself remind us the colonial period connection of the market. At first the place where now the market was previously a part of 'Puthanchantha'. Later the English army came to Thiruvanathapuram at the time of the revolt of Veluthampi in Travancore. The place they camped came to be known as 'Palayam'.After that the army moved to Kollam. The company battalion was dismissed and 'Nair Brigade' was formed by the English officials. It's headquarters was at Puthanchantha and later Palayam. With this the market was established to supply essential commodities to the English officials and other officers who were residing in Ananthapuri. It was during the reign of Rani Gowri Parvathy Bhai that the Palayam bazaar was started. The proclamation was issued in the year 992 Medam 2 (malayalam era), English year 1817. The details of the launch of the Palayam market was informed in every Taluks, police stations and tax collecting centres. The proclamation also commands to begin the bazaar on 18 Medam 992(ME), 1817 AD. Thus the market in Palayam began to grow gradually. It became a prominent destination like the Chala and Pettah markets. Swathi Thirunal who ascended to the throne after Rani Gowri Parvathy Bhai, permanently transferred the HajoorKacheri or secretariat from Kollam to Thiruvananthapuram. Furthermore, the employees and officials in the secretariat started residing in the places near Palayam and Kunnukuzhy. This led to the rapid development of the market.
The market got it's name after the 1st and last Baron Connemara Sir Robert Bourke who served as the Governor of Madras.
