This place is of historic importance as the Fort Emmanuel being the first Portuguese fort in Asia was built by Portuguese as a part of an alliance with the Kingdom of Kochi and it was named after Portuguese King Manuel-1. Though original Fort Emmanuel was destroyed by Dutch and English during the 19th century invasions, a gun battery from the old fort is saved and displayed as an installation at this site. The Government of Kerala and Tourism department is least concerned about preserving this piece of history in a way it deserves. This surviving gun battery is in a pathetic condition due to lack of proper maintenance.
