Munnar: The Munnar Botanical Garden which aims to provide entertainment with leisure and knowledge for the tourists was inaugurated today. In a colourful event presided over by S Rajendran MLA, the garden was inaugurated by tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran at 2pm. The tourism department has spent around Rs 4.5 crore to open the botanical garden at the Munnar-Devikulam road near the government college. In the initial stage of the project, the garden has been arranged in sprawling 5 acres. The visitors can enjoy the spectacular garden which houses around 150 varieties of flowering plants, an open theatre, beautiful landscapes, walkways, canteen, souvenir shop and spice shops. The entry fee for adults would be Rs 20 per head and Rs 10 for children below 12 years. The second stage of the Munnar town beautification project, which got stalled after inaugurating it in 2003, would resume soon. Rs 3.5 crore have been allotted for this purpose. A 400 meter walkway on the river bank near the DTPC information centre at Old Munnar, a garden, and an open air theatre have been included in this project. The Kerala State Nirmithi Kendra has been entrusted with the construction on contract basis valid for a year.

Other than the tea estates and the picture perfect greenery, this is the only other place I liked in my 4 days Munnar trip. It's clean, well maintained and has lots of activities for kids (there are three separate kids parks available). There is a river flowing next to the garden where they have arranged a nice long walking track for you to spend quality time with your loved ones. The lightings were amazing and the fountain show was wonderful! Only suggestion for the musical fountain show, there were only Tamil songs available, keep some Bollywood and Malayalam songs. And the sound system quality can also be improved. Best time to visit the garden is from 5PM, spend some time in the park and be ready at the musical fountain area for the 7PM show. They have very nice sitting arrangement (a slope) so that everyone can enjoy the show without any disturbances. Like any other botanical garden, they do have a nursery within the premises where you can buy plants. Also there is enough parking place available on the roadsides.

It's a beautiful place situated a few km from the hassle and bazzle of the Munnar town. The place is situated on the new scenic route, Kochi - Dhanushkodi highway. The best time to visit is during the night time if you like to see all the lights, well arranged and well maintained. At night it's a bit difficult to explore all the flowers. The correct beauty cannot be fully explored. But its adjustable and proper lighting helps to beautify the place. The time to explore flowers is during morning time, but the lights and all will be missed. It's a beautiful place to visit. Definitely try it out. Parking on the side of the road. Plenty of space is there. The price currently present is a bit high considering the fact it's Govt Botanical Garden. Per person it's 50 now. But it's adjustable since the beauty and things to see are beautiful there. At night these lights can be seen from the other side of the road. Beautiful place to visit while visiting Munnar.

The garden is home to a vast collection of exotic and indigenous plants, including rare orchids, medicinal plants, and spices. The garden is well-maintained, with pathways that wind through the different sections, providing a peaceful and tranquil environment. I was particularly impressed with the rose garden, which was in full bloom during my visit, and the collection of cacti and succulents, which were fascinating to see up close. The park also has several attractions, including a butterfly park and a greenhouse, which provide a unique experience for visitors. The staff were knowledgeable and provided helpful information about the different plants and their uses. Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the Government Botanical Garden in Munnar for anyone interested in nature, plants, or just looking for a relaxing and beautiful place to spend some time.
