The Mahakavi Bharathiyar Memorial Museum, a Grade I heritage structure, is a synthesis of French colonial and traditional Tamil-style architecture. The façade is in vernacular architectural style with a 'thinnai' and a 'thazhvaram'. To-day it appears as an immortal memorial to the great poet. In a way it was a centre of deliberations aiming at attaining the freedom to the country. The house where the poet's kuyil once sounded its melody, has been acquired by the Govt. of Pondicherry in the year 1972.
It is a very interesting place to visit. Here Mahakavi Bharathiar lived for ten years and wrote many of his best poems here. Many people does not know the place. Read moreThe legendary "மகாகவி" (Great Poet) lived in this house between 1908 and 1918. The house is still maintained in a similar way. Feeling privileged to enter the house, wherein the great saint lived. The house also had lots of photos about Bharathi, including the sub-jail in Cuddalore, wherein he was incarcerated for 20 days. He later passed away due to illness (caused by the strike of an elephant) at Thiruvallikeni (Triplicane) on 12th Sep 1921. Also, heard that his 4th Generation are alive in multiple countries like USA & Canada and in Chennai too. Bharathiyar Memorial Museum cum Research Centre located at Puducherry was established commemorating the renowned Tamil poet and freedom fighter Subramanya Bharathiyar, popularly entitled the sobriquet "Mahakavi", literally the supreme poet.
