Mansa Devi Temple is one of the most revered temple of Goddess Mansa Devi located at Bilwa Parvat near Haridwar. This temple is a holy place to worship Goddess Mansa, who is believed to be a form of Shakti, emerged from the mind of great Sage Kashyap. Mansa Devi temple is a famous Siddhpeeth and offers panoramic views of Haridwar city.

Haridwar is one of the most ancient pilgrimage centers in India that has been reverence from times immemorial. Hari means Lord/God and Dwar means Gateway. Hence Haridwar means Gateway to the Lord. According to the India mythology, it is one of the four places where drops of elixir, Amrita accidentally spilled over from the pitcher or Kumbha, in which it was being carried away by the celestial bird Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. These four spots have today become places where the Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years in succession - Nasik, Ujjain, Haridwar and Allahabad. Millions of devotees and tourist congregate from all over the world to celebrate this celestial event and perform ritualistic bathing on the banks of the river Ganges.

Mansa Devi Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to goddess Mansa Devi in the holy city of Haridwar in the Uttarakhand state of India. The temple is located atop of the Bilwa Parvat on the Sivalik Hills, the southernmost mountain chain of the Himalayas. The temple also known as Bilwa Tirth is one of the Panch Tirth (Five Pilgrimages) within Haridwar.

The temple is known for being the holy abode of Manasa, a form of Shakti and is said to have emerged from the mind of the sage (Rishi) Kashyapa. Mansa is regarded as the sister of the Naga (Viper) Vasuki. The term Mansa means wish and it is believed that the goddess fulfils all the wishes of a sincere devotee. Devotees who want their wishes to be fulfilled by Mansa tie threads to the branches of a tree located in the temple. Once their wishes are fulfilled, people come back again to the temple to untie the thread from the tree. Mansa is also offered coconuts, fruits, garlands and incense sticks in order to appease her.

Mansa Devi Temple can be reached in two ways: on foot or by cable car. Walking requires a one and a half kilometer hike uphill. The track is sealed but the exertion can be draining during the hot months. Hence, many people prefer to take the cable car (also referred to as a ropeway) up, and walk down. The first cable car starts running at 7 a.m. during April to October, and 8 a.m. the rest of the year. Tickets cost INR 122 rupees per person, return. A Divine Experience

Mansa Devi, literally meaning the "Goddess who fulfills desires," is a form of Shakti and one of the most revered deities in Haridwar. It's one of the three Siddh Peethas (places where wishes are granted) in the city, alongside Chandi Devi and Maya Devi temples. The belief here is strong: tie a thread to the sacred tree within the temple complex, make a wish, and if it comes true, return to untie it as a gesture of gratitude. It's a beautiful, tangible tradition that truly connects you to the faith.

The temple itself is a testament to traditional North Indian Hindu architecture, with vibrant red walls and intricate carvings. Inside, you'll find two main idols of the goddess – one with eight arms, and another with three heads and five arms. The spiritual energy within the sanctum is palpable, making for a very moving experience.

Getting There is Half the Fun! There are a couple of ways to reach the temple:

The Ropeway (Udan Khatola): This is by far the most popular and recommended option. The "Udan Khatola" (flying palanquin) offers an exhilarating ride up the hill, providing stunning aerial views of Haridwar's landscape and the winding Ganges below. It's convenient, quick, and adds an element of adventure to your visit.

The Trek: For the more adventurous or those seeking a more traditional pilgrimage, a 3 km uphill trek with well-laid steps is available. It's a good workout and allows you to soak in the natural beauty at a slower pace.

Plan Your Visit Best Time to Visit: The cooler months from October to March are ideal. The weather is pleasant, making both the ropeway ride and any potential walking much more enjoyable.

Timings: The temple generally opens around 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM and closes between 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with slight variations between summer and winter. The ropeway usually operates from 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM. Always double-check current timings before your visit as they can change.

Aarti Timings: Attending the morning or evening aarti (prayer ceremony) is a deeply spiritual experience. Morning aarti typically takes place around 4:30 AM to 6:00 AM, and evening aarti between 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, depending on the season.

Offerings: You'll find plenty of shops near the base and top of the hill selling coconuts, flowers, and other items to offer the goddess.

Overall Recommendation Whether you're a devout pilgrim or simply a traveler seeking cultural insights and scenic beauty, the Maa Mansa Devi Temple offers a memorable experience. The combination of spiritual serenity, stunning views, and the unique ropeway ride makes it a highlight of any Haridwar itinerary. Don't miss out on this...

The spiritual energy within the sanctum is palpable, making for a very moving experience. Getting There is Half the Fun! There are a couple of ways to reach the temple: The Ropeway (Udan Khatola): This is by far the most popular and recommended option. Don't miss out on this "wish-fulfilling" journey!
