Interesting church dating all the way back to 1695 - making it the oldest church still standing in Jakarta. It used to be known as the 'Portugeese Buitenkerk', referring to its position as a church for the local 'Mardijker' community - people with partial Portuguese ancestry from former Portuguese colonies in Malacca, the Moluccas and elsewhere. Inside the church, you'll find beautifully decorated wooden furniture, an impressive organ and an equally impressive pulpit. The interior of this building probably comes closest to a typical Dutch church as you can find in Jakarta. Gereja Sion used to be surrounded by a huge graveyard, of which only a small part remains. This part includes the tombstone of former governor-general Hendrick Zwaardecroon, who died in 1728 and wanted to be buried "among...

It really is a beautiful place to see. And Mr.Tasum, the church keeper, was very friendly & informative in explaining & answering about this old building. I was in owe looking at the six grand pillar, the priest' tribune, the pipe organ & the VIP area under the organ. They even still keep the original table, chairs + old hat & jacket hanger from the...

The oldest church in Indonesia, you can feel the history during the visit. The organ which is almost as old as the church is still working. Everything about the church is just magic.. the people should work to preserve this piece of the Indonesian history.
