The Glucksman — Attraction in Cork

They don't make many buildings like this in Ireland. This gallery looks great from the outside and inside.

Located beside a stream in the leafy grounds of University College Cork, the straight concrete lines and curved wood exterior of the building hints at something a little more than ordinary.

Inside, the large open exhibition spaces are framed by large windows and that leafy corner of Cork outside.

There is a great bookshop with plenty of interesting gifts and as always the exhibition changes. Each year there is a Christmas gift fair held over the course of a weekend in November.

It's difficult to know how many stars to give The Glucksman. The setting is beautiful and the building is interesting although looking a bit tatty these days. The restaurant, in it's current incarnation, is good and a nice place to be on a sunny day. As for the exhibitions, they are often extremely dull and seem to be more interested in being worthy and socially relevant and ticking off a series of curatorial boxes than in presenting visually arresting artworks that work on their own terms. The Glucksman is a prominent museum known for creative learning and visual arts. It's a part of UCC. Situated at the main entrance to UCC on Western Road, this place is an award-winning building that has display spaces, lecture facilities, a riverside restaurant and gallery shop.
