Casina del piacere — Attraction in Caprarola

While the Casina “small house” is closed to the public, the surrounding well manicured labyrinth garden, statues, staircase and (non-functional) fountains are much more beautiful to see. I could imagine the Cardinal Farnese coming to visit his women in this “House of Pleasure.” His kept women had an separate entrance in the rear of the building away from the main villa. I created a scene in my mind where the Cardinal would arrive by horse before ascending the staircase while water flowing through the phallic dolphin fountain foreshadowed his erection and later release of fluid. The woman awaiting his Highness on the balcony in a flowing white gown to meet him. The satyr sculptures here announce that there is no shame. It’s well worth a visit to think on the history of excess and power and what may go on in the present...

Estasiati dal palazzo questo bel complesso vi sembrerà nulla nonostante i suoi bei giardini all'italiana e le sue belle fontane. La prospettiva venendo dalla villa è mozzafiato, tra le più belle delle tante presenti nel Lazio (fate un confronto con Villa Lante, ndr). Il casino di suo -se visitabile - è molto grazioso ma non speciale.... è il tutto che risulta molto armonioso sebbene sia stato iniziato dal Vignola e poi terminato da un suo collaboratore. La destinazione, come dice il nome, era il piacere..il deliziare i propri ospiti, non necessariamente con la caccia che anzi pare non fosse molto amata da Alessandro Farnese. Un consiglio...una volta saliti concentratevi sull'ammirare una ad una le tante statue che ornano i due piazzali dei giardini antistante e retrostante.
