This round square is the face of 21st century Milan. Or, at least, the symbol of how Milan sees itself and how it wants to be seen in the 21st century: shiny new buildings, imposing, yet sleek skyscrapers, corporate offices, restaurants and shopping centers. You may like or dislike the style (and the stark contrast with the old architecture of Milan), but it is important to go and see it as a symbol. It was inaugurated at the end of 2012 and dedicated to the Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti, who had passed a couple of months before. It combines this aseptic modernity with some green spaces and the fountains at the center of this round square measuring 100 meters in diameter are also a fun place for kids to get wet in the summer. Everything is nicely maintained and spotlessly clean. To fully embrace the symbolism, have an ice cream at Grom's on the square: Grom was created as an artisanal ice cream parlour in the "rival city" of Turin and then it was incorporated into a large industrial corporation around the same time the square opened to the public (but the ice cream is still...
Read moreAn interesting piece of contemporary architecture, The square is dotted with minimalist fountains, with water flowing at the floor level, and it is surrounded by buildings forming a spiral, that makes them reach higher and higher, up to the top of the Unicredit skyscraper. In the square there are various bars and shops that attract a colorful crowd of young people and tourists. In particular, it boasts the headquarters of the Unicredit bank and the Milan office of IBM. Eventually, the square is elevated above the street level, where other restaurants and other shops are located. An evocative place of the new Milanese sociality, symbol of the redevelopment of the Porta Garibaldi district, as well as of the more recent architectural concepts. Which make for a somewhat cold place, but with a powerful glance, worthy of a visit. Well connected, with Garibaldi metro and railway station, it's just a stone's throw from the iconic corso Como, where it is certainly worth taking at least one stroll among the symbolic shops of...
Read moreThis piazza is just magically, architecturally perfect! As soon as you get off the metro in the Garibaldi stop you can walk right across and ahhhh, there it is ::heart eyes::
There's just something about this place that I love, any time of the day that you come it's so pleasant and enjoyable. If you come during the day for a quick supermarket run downstairs just the breeze and the buildings make you feel so happy. If you come read a book at the Feltrinelli or grab a quick aperitivo in their outside seating area, you will have the best view with the plaza.
I just love grabbing a gelato at Venchi Gelateria and sitting down whenever I can with the sound of the water and breeze. The perfect afternoon for a thoughtless day.
This plaza is great, in a hot summery day, tourists always love to jump in the little fountain/water area and it's the perfect spot to cool off yourself or your four paw friend. Great piazza! You...
