Today we had the experience of a lifetime. It is the experience by which other future experiences will be judged. We went on the Emotional Tour of Montioni Winery. It was truly the best experience we have had in a very long time.
Paolo is a very knowledgeable person when it come to wine and olive oil making, and business, and life. The most wonderful part is that he communicates his crafts and heritage in such a positive and genuine way that you feel like you are talking with an old friend. He is truly a MASTER.
We arrived for our tour, and there were many people going on the tour of the vineyards and olive groves. He made us fee special through his mannerisms and story telling. He included us rather than just talking to us.
But now on to the sights, sounds, smells and tastes.
We learned about several varieties of grape and how their growing conditions and harvest times are. We were invited to taste each variety of grape and "assess" the taste. He helped us along. It was so very cool. We could taste the difference in the grapes and then taste similar differences in the wine. We learned that by having the correct plot of ground for grape growing it could be done without pesticides or chemicals, and that is Paolo's way.
Next we visited the olive groves. We saw trees that were 200 plus years old that were so cared for like children. The views of Umbria were spectacular from the olive grove.
Next we learned how the products in the fields were turned into wine and olive oil and how the remnants of production were used as fertilizer in the fields. What a process. Machine to machine to press, and extract the olive oil and to ferment and age the wine. WOW, Who knew. I loved the learning.
Now for the best part. We shared in food and wine with the other guests and Paolo and his family cared for our every need with plates of cheese, meats, and fruit, eggs, and bread, and olive oil and wine. As my father says, "it was a gustatory orgasm". The food was spectacular, the wine was superb, and the olive oil was far and away the best we have ever had.
We left feeling full in our bellies, fully in our minds and the best part full and well cared for by an amazing man and his family.
Thanks Paolo. You are a truly amazing man.

Read moreVisited June 2023. My wife and I recently stayed in Montefalco while exploring Umbria for a couple of weeks. We decided to stop by the Montioni Winery to have a wine tasting of their offerings. The winery is conveniently close to Montefalco. It was late afternoon so there were no crowds and we had the pleasure of a personal wine tasting. We were offered four of their wines to taste and also some of the olive oil that they produce. The young lady assisting us was very personable and knowledgeable, and did a great job explaining each wine/oil we were tasting. It was a great experience and visit - we would certainly recommend it. We ended up purchasing a bottle of their Sagrantino Passito and a small can of their olive oil to take home as...
Read moreThe owner and winemaker, Paolo Montioni, and his wife met us upon our arrival with warm welcomes and gave us a quick tour of their olive harvesting and olive oil production. We lucked out to be here during their olive oil season.
We then started a private wine tasting with Paolo to taste 5 of his wines and 2 olive oils on toasted breads (bruschetta). It was only €10! He was such a great host! Nothing beats having the owner and winemaker lead these wine tastings. It was informal and fun. He even made lunch reservations for us at a nearby restaurant. And lunch at the restaurant he booked us in was fantastic too! We all loved his wines and ended up ordering 6 cases to be...
