Pompeii is is an old Roman town, situated about 23km southeast of Naples, at the base of the Mount Vesuvius. It is a must be seen ancient site that must be visited, should you ever travel to Italy!!! It took us around 5 hours to walk around the site. I recommend some comfy hiking shoes or sandals to wear, as the roads and the narrow pavements are made from large uneven rocks. There are lots of car parks at the various entrances to the city, but I would advice you to check the less popular smaller car parks, in the nearby back streets, as they are much cheaper and less crowded. The city is amasing, taking you back to the Vll century. The once so prosperous city with the huge Forum centre in the middle suffered tremendous damage and destruction after the eruption of the Mount Vesuvius. The Forum used to be the centre of social, cultural, religious and political life of this ancient Roman city. There are so many ruins to be seen, including old temples and old municipal buildings, courts and urban areas, the many bath houses that the Romans had built and used regularly. I was gobsmacked by how advanced the Romans were, having wells and fountains on many streets and courtyards in the city, having zebra crossings made from large rocks, and having beautiful tiles and decorations inside their houses and shops. The Forum square has a stand called the Suggestum,,from which the orators spoke to the people. There are so many old statues to be seen of the once important men of the city. It is an amasing ancient historical city with amasing views to the Vesuvius. Every minute that we spent there last summer was well worth it!

Pompeii (/pɒmˈpeɪ(i)/, Latin: [pɔmˈpeːjjiː]) was an ancient Roman city located in the modern comune of Pompei near Naples in the Campania region of Italy. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 2.5 million visitors annually. By 2008, it was attracting almost 2.6 million visitors per year, making it one of the most popular tourist sites in Italy. It is part of a larger Vesuvius National Park and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. To combat problems associated with tourism, the governing body for Pompeii, the Soprintendenza Archaeological di Pompei, have begun issuing new tickets that allow tourists to visit cities such as Herculaneum and Stabiae as well as the Villa Poppaea, to encourage visitors to see these sites and reduce pressure on Pompeii. In 1971, the rock band Pink Floyd filmed a live concert titled Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, in which they performed six songs in the ancient Roman amphitheatre in the city. The audience consisted only of the film's production crew and some local children.

The Foro di Pompei is the beating heart of the ancient city a wide-open plaza that instantly transports you to Roman times. Surrounded by the ruins of temples, public buildings and markets, the Forum offers a compelling sense of what daily life might have been like nearly 2,000 years ago before Mount Vesuvius buried the city in ash. It’s both grand and haunting. You stand where merchants once sold their goods, where politicians addressed the crowd and where citizens gathered under the shadow of the once-proud temples to Jupiter and Apollo. What’s left of the columns and facades still echoes with history. From the Forum, you also get one of the most dramatic views of Vesuvius a quiet but constant reminder of the city’s tragic fate. The space is well preserved and clearly signposted. It’s central to most of the other ruins, so it’s a good starting or ending point for your visit. Try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and enjoy the changing light on the ancient stones. Tip: Bring water, wear good walking shoes and if you’re keen on deeper context, a guided tour with Mario is the way to go which really brings the Forum and its significance to life. A must-see highlight of Pompeii simple yet deeply moving.

The Pompeii Forum inside the ruins of Pompeii is wonderful! My Wife, Family and I really enjoyed visiting this historic archeological site! ERUPTION DATE UPDATED; (Wikipedia) The eruption was documented by contemporary historians and is generally accepted as having started on 24 August 79, relying on one version of the text of Pliny's letter. However the archeological excavations of Pompeii suggest that the city was buried about three months later. This is supported by another version of the letter, which gives the date of the eruption as November 23. People buried in the ash appear to have been wearing heavier clothing than the light summer clothes typical of August. The fresh fruit and vegetables in the shops are typical of October—and conversely the summer fruit typical of August was already being sold in dried, or conserved form. Wine fermenting jars had been sealed, which would have happened around the end of October. Coins found in the purse of a woman buried in the ash include one with a fifteenth imperatorial acclamation among the emperor's titles. These cannot have been minted before the second week of September. So far there is no definitive theory as to why there should be such an apparent discrepancy.

Excellent place for those who are interested in historical/archeological sites. Tickets- first Sunday of the month is free but expect good crowd there. Adults€13,. kids under 18 free!! (Cards accepted) Make sure that you have charged up the batteries of the cameras and mobile phones as there are plenty of photo ops. If you want to know everything thoroughly, please spend some time here- maybe couple of days. Section 7 & 8 are the imp ones. Don't miss out on the historical human bodies in lava. (We did it in 6 hrs incl leisure walk and lunch) Toilet facility is also available. If interested to do just a scan around and say you've been to Pompeii, photos at landmarks could be done in couple of hours. Audio guides are available for a price €6.50 per person- cash only Make sure you get receipt immediately upon deposit of your ID. (Return the audio guide by 5:00/5:15pm (Nov timings) and get your ID back) Good audio guide but undergoing changes. Site itself is huge so be prepared to walk. Strollers/buggies/prams are allowed and doable but difficult to push through some areas as there are cobbled pathways. Good cloak room facility for big bags/suitcases. They will also give you a clear (colourless) plastic bag for free if you have too many loose items in hand, that can be used as a shoulder bag. That one is really nicely thought out!! Site has a nice but little expensive restaurant. Good facilities throughout. Rail station - Pompeii Scavi - just across the street so travel from and to Naples is very convenient. Found all the staff to be nice and welcoming though some staff weren't fluent in English. I don't blame them but as such, as not many could communicate in English in Italy. (Just mentioning our experience, others' might...
