Not sure if anyone would read this considering the overall number of reviews about the Archeological Park, but I would like to warn the visitors that the travel agency so heavily advertising at the train station under the name "TicketsPompeii" and trapping tourists as soon as they get off the train is NOT the actual ticket office of the park. They sell guided tours for 20EUR per person in addition to the ticket price, which is not a problem, if that's what you want, but you should know that they are an independent business. Alternatively, there is are guide services provided at the site entrance, which are also VERY problematic and are the reason I subtracted a star, because the Pompeii website does not warn you that, unlike the aggressive travel agency practice, they do ABSOLUTELY nothing to form groups at the entrance, and so if the group is not formed, the price of the tour is 150eur. If it's formed, the price is to be divided among all the group members. Apparently, in the afternoon, making a group is very hard, and you might arrive, lose time waiting, and still not get to enjoy the guided tour. Another option is an audio guide for 8 eur, which is quite annoying, as they usually are, but provides quite good information about Pompeii and its life. Without any guidance, the site is very difficult to navigate, providing almost no written information once inside. I must say also that they start to close all the interesting rooms 1.5 hours before the actual closure time, which can be very disappointing if you get there in the late afternoon. That said, the site is absolutely amazing, extremely interesting and educational with some guidance. It's an absolute must! Just arrive a bit earlier and be aware of all the services provided (or not) by the Park and the scammers. A separate thank you to Michela, a lady who worked at the audio guide booth. She is very attentionate, kind, empathetic. She made my visit so...
Read morePompeii as an archaeological site is grandiose, there is nothing like it in the world. A must-see. But there are several comments on the organization. The tourist fraud industry is brilliantly organized here. Already at the exit from the station, all tourists are driven to the black resellers' ticket office, which, of course, is not much different from the real one, but sells tickets with its own commission. Also, if you are with children, then such a ticket office will not give you a ticket for a child and you will have to get it additionally by standing in line at the official ticket office. But you will find it out only when you try to enter the archaeological complex. Another surprise awaits those who try to enter the part where the Villa Mysteria is located with this ticket - this part is not included in the ticket. The queue at the cafe is disgustingly organized. In one line you can only pay for pastries and drinks, and in another also paninis. As a result, most tourists, having stood in line for a panini, discover that they were standing in the wrong line. In Pompeii, there are not only homeless cats, but also homeless dogs. When you sit down on the ancient steps and open your panini, do not be surprised if both types of professional beggars come up to you. The line for the only toilet we found was enormous There are a lot of injuries among tourists, especially the elderly. It is difficult to make your way along the stones, there are no paved roads. People fall and get seriously injured. We saw two who were treated by emergency doctors. Be...
Read moreI would certainly recommend buying tickets upfront. We were lucky to do so, and didn’t have to wait in any line. The official website recommends doing so as well, and trust me, it’s the best decision.
If you’re a true fan of history, Pompeii atmosphere will take you deep inside of the life of the romans. The whole city of ghosts is massive, it took us between 5 hours to get through every accessible house and site. However, the whole trip can be done within 2-3 hours, we’re just geeks.
Not only you’ll see the ruins, throughout the whole city itself are walking “actors” in uniforms, classic Roman clothes, and although they’re speaking in Italian and not Latin, it really gives you the feeling you’re tome traveling. The staff is generally kind with good level of English if you have any specific questions about the site, don’t hesitate to ask.
We did not have experience with taking a tour guide, I would recommend downloading the official app where there’s a map and each important site is described in what it is and the history behind it. As far as we were told, the guides take you through the most important things, but if you wanna wander on your own, make your research, it’s not that much. I would recommend making a research on the general history behind POMPEI, but also maybe some architectural background, so you can wander on your own and guess what house is what, why are they built like that and what purpose did they server in it’s time.
In general, the site is really well maintained, and you get an experience...
