On February 8th and 9th, 2025, I visited the flea market at Gokoku Shrine in Fukuoka. The weather was freezing, and the cold wind stung my skin. However, the market was lively and full of people, creating a warm and energetic atmosphere.
There were many different kinds of items, including antique goods, vintage clothes, records, pottery, and leather products. Each piece had its own charm, not just because it was old, but because it carried a story. The leather goods shop especially caught my eye, displaying well-aged bags, wallets, and belts. I couldn’t help but admire their unique textures and craftsmanship.
I was also drawn to a shop selling vintage French goods from the 1960s. The stall was filled with colorful tin cans, elegant ceramic plates, and delicate lace napkins, all with a classic charm. The shopkeeper told me, “This tin was made in Paris in the 1960s. It was a limited-edition tea canister from a famous brand at the time.” The design still looked stylish even today, showing that true beauty can last for decades.
Because of the cold weather, the stalls selling hot drinks were especially popular. Some shops offered chai and green tea, and many people held warm cups in their hands to fight the chill. The rich aroma of spiced chai filled the air, making the market feel cozy despite the cold.
Another highlight was the baked goods. There were shops selling buttery financiers, crispy cookies, and moist muffins. The scent of freshly baked pastries spread through the market, attracting many customers. People smiled as they enjoyed their warm treats with a hot drink, creating a heartwarming scene.
I didn’t buy anything this time, but just walking around was an enjoyable experience. Looking at unique items, chatting with shop owners, and feeling the lively energy of the market made me feel happy and fulfilled. Next time, I hope to find a special leather item or a beautiful piece of pottery. I also want to search for a charming vintage French piece to take home—and, of course, enjoy some delicious...
