During my visit to Kyoto, Japan, I had the opportunity to explore 高台寺 竹林, a serene bamboo forest and temple. My wife and I made it a point to arrive right at opening time and were delighted to find that we were among the first visitors there. This timing turned out to be perfect, as it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves, allowing for a truly personal and peaceful experience. First and foremost, the architecture of the temple was beyond beautiful. There's a certain timeless elegance and tranquility to Japanese temple architecture that is incredibly captivating, and 高台寺 竹林 was no exception. Walking through the grounds, with the meticulously maintained buildings and gardens, was like stepping into another world. The bamboo forest itself was a highlight of our trip. The tall, swaying bamboo stalks created an otherworldly atmosphere that was both calming and awe-inspiring. The way the light filtered through the dense bamboo canopy was magical, casting a soft, ethereal glow that was perfect for contemplative walks and photography. Along the path, there were various stories and information plaques that caught my attention – a rare occurrence for me. These narratives provided a deeper understanding and appreciation of the place, its history, and its cultural significance. It's always enriching to learn about the places you visit, and the stories at 高台寺 竹林 were both engaging and educational. In conclusion, 高台寺 竹林 in Kyoto is a must-visit for anyone looking for a peaceful and beautiful experience. The combination of stunning architecture, the enchanting bamboo forest, and the rich stories make it a unique and memorable destination. My wife and I left with smiles on our faces, feeling grateful for the tranquility and beauty we had experienced.

Quiet, peaceful, and tranquil. We arrived just after it opened so there were very few people there. Strolled through the bamboo forest and had it to ourselves for a bit. It is a short walk but beautiful nonetheless. The location is very convenient and nearby other popular sights. There are several things to see along the way. There was some construction going on at the shrine area which was distracting due to the noise but overall it was a lovely place and we didn’t have to deal with any crowds which was ideal for photographs 💚

A Magical Experience in Nature Walking through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest feels like stepping into another world. The towering bamboo stalks sway gently in the breeze, creating a peaceful, almost otherworldly atmosphere. It’s a relatively short walk but incredibly scenic and calming. Make sure to go early because it gets crowded quickly—early mornings are best to enjoy the tranquility. A must-visit spot when in Kyoto—truly unforgettable!

The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest in Kyoto is definitely one of Japan’s most iconic sights — and it really is as beautiful in person as it looks in photos. Tall bamboo stalks stretch high above you, swaying gently with the wind and creating a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere. The light filtering through the green canopy is stunning, especially in the early morning.

That said, go early! It gets very crowded by late morning, especially on weekends and holidays. Arriving before 8:00 AM gives you the best chance to enjoy it in peace and take photos without tons of people.

The path is not very long — you can walk through in about 15–20 minutes — but it’s a great part of a larger visit to the Arashiyama area. There’s also Tenryū-ji Temple nearby, the Ōi River, monkey park, traditional shops, and even rickshaw rides through the bamboo for a unique view.

Tips: • Free to enter, open 24/7 • Wear comfy shoes — it’s an easy walk, but can get slippery when wet • Best times: early morning or late afternoon for soft lighting and fewer crowds • Combine it with a visit to nearby temples or a riverside picnic

Overall: A must-see spot in Kyoto — short and sweet, but incredibly scenic. Just time it right if you want that peaceful,...

THIS IS NOT ARASHIYAMA BAMBOO FOREST!! Please be aware. However, this place is very nice. There is an entrance fee of 600¥, but it is worth it because there are not many people. You can calmly take pictures with the bamboo with few interruption. There are some shrines and other attractions too, so take some time and enjoy. It is near the big Buddha statue in Ryozen Kannon temple, so you can do both in one day.

Only downside was that there was a landscaper loudly blowing leaves with a gas-powered leaf blower, it ruined the zen. For the Admin, can this please occur at some other time when visitors are not present?? Thank you.

Overall good place and there is a nice park nearby too where you can...
