RACIST WAITER!!
Very cute dessert place. We tried their famous warm matcha, but my favorite was their matcha ice cream. It’s definitely the best matcha I’ve tried in Japan (or maybe ever).
Some staff members were friendly, even when we wanted to change table because one had a better view they allowed it. However, there was one very rude girl with bleached blond hair. We were with 4 people but wanted to order 3 desserts because we still very full from a previous meal, so didn’t want to waste any food in case we can’t finish it. Unfortunately, the girl kept asking why we ordered 3 desserts but we are with for people. When we didn’t understand her question she switched to English, then back to Japanese and even gave our a huge sigh and acted as if we were stupid. We thought she might kick us out, so we ordered 4 desserts even though we really didn’t want to. Then when we finished after 35 minutes, she came back and asked if we were done and ready to leave. Not in a friendly way…very unusual for Japanese people in the service industry. We came here for the view, the food and paid more than 5.000 yen to be treated this way is absolutely unacceptable. There were no one in the restaurant other than us and one other group of Japanese ladies who were sitting outside and even took more time eating and taking pictures than us. We are very upset about the whole thing.
So please come here for the view and great taste ting desserts, but ask to be served by someone else other than the bleached haired girl. Not sure if she treated us this way because she had a bad day, or because we are a group of Vietnamese, Chinese and Korean. The whole ordeal left us with a bad taste in our mouth and spoiled our Kyoto...

We made a special stop at Gion Yasaka to try their Kyoto charcoal eels, and it was absolutely worth the trip! The eel rice bowl here is superb—perfectly grilled over charcoal for that smoky, tender bite that practically melts in your mouth. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but the quality and the overall experience make it feel like a treat worth indulging in.
One of the best parts of dining at Gion Yasaka is the setting itself. The restaurant offers a lovely garden view, adding a touch of tranquillity to the meal and making it feel like a little oasis in the heart of Kyoto. Whether you’re a long-time unagi fan or trying it for the first time, this place delivers an experience that’s both authentic and memorable.
If you’re visiting Kyoto and want to treat yourself to a delicious, traditional meal, Gion Yasaka is definitely a place to consider. Come hungry, savour every bite, and soak in the serene atmosphere—it’s an experience you’ll be thinking about long after you leave!

From the moment we arrived at Kyoto Unagi Suisen Ion Yasaka, the hospitality was warm and genuine. The staff welcomed us with big smiles, explained the menu clearly, and made us feel completely at ease. The setting is peaceful and beautiful, with stunning views over the garden and pond. It was exactly the kind of Kyoto atmosphere we had dreamed of — calm, elegant, and full of charm.
The service had real 心 (kokoro — heart). They kindly accommodated our stroller and baby, and even though there was no baby changing facility, they went out of their way to assist us with grace and care. We felt like honoured guests in someone’s home. The warmth they showed our little one touched us deeply.
The food was outstanding. The unagi was rich and perfectly grilled, and the wagyu beef was some of the highest-grade we’ve had — tender, flavourful, and beautifully presented. Every dish was handled with craftsmanship and pride.
We will absolutely return the next time we’re in Kyoto. Highly recommended for anyone seeking not just great food, but true Japanese hospitality. Arigatou...
