Loved it! A boat ride down an extremely beautiful canal. I'm sure it we made better by understanding the Japanese only guide. Maybe there is an app you can use for real time translation. Apparently it's best at sakura season or autumn leaf color changing season but you'd need to book weeks or more in advance for those days. I was there April 24th. I'd recommend riding from here, the Kyoto side, to the Otsu side. When you get off, walk back a little to the temple above (三井寺/Miidera) for the view...

Nice afternoon walk off the beaten path, rich in history about the water canals used to bring water from lake Biwa to the city of Kyoto. You can still see cars, rails and boats used in the past, along with the old pulling system. If you plan head of time you can do the water canal tour. Best in peak...

11月20日午前中の上り便で、蹴上から三井寺乗下船場まで乗船しました。10月の秋季予約開始時間に公式ページを開いたのですが、希望の日時(下り便)は既に売り切れ…本当に「この日しか予定が組めない」という方はあらゆる対策をとり予約に臨んでください。(特に春季は争奪戦！)予約完了メールを受け取って、ワクワクしながら集合場所に到着したら待合所でびわ湖疎水の歴史や見どころをビデオで予習。コンパクトな船の定員は10人前後なので、リラックスしてクルーズできると思います。ガイドさんは関西弁で面白おかしく説明され、船内は笑いが絶えませんでした。今度は春、満開の桜を見上げながら大津から下って行きたいものです。 留意点 ①待合所にはトイレが併設されています。なるべく用を済ませておくと安心です。水辺は冷えるので。 ②念の為にカッパ、ポンチョなどの雨具を100均で用意しとくとよろしいかと。突然の雨、波しぶき、風よけに役立ちます。水辺は冷えるので。 ③大津港発着便だと閘門での水位変化が楽しめるそうです(琵琶湖と疎水では水面差が約4m)。今年は11月21日からの運行だったらしく、私はそれを見逃して悔しい思いをしました。
