Hogon Temple — Attraction in Matsuyama

The people working the shrine were very nice and had a small child like me. They happily completed the goshuin. There is a building for worship and a s small building like museum. Enjoyed our visit. Not exactly stroller friendly...

Buddhist temple said to be the birthplace of Ippen Shonin, a 13th century Buddhist preacher and founder of a certain sect of Japanese Buddhism. I'm not really well informed enough of all the different sects to give more info that. Apparently, there was a major fire in 2013 which destroyed most of the historical buildings, so the temple is fairly modern these days.The grounds are very well maintained though. Goshuin available.

道後は坂の多い町です。道後温泉駅からまっすぐ東に延びる道を伊佐爾波坂といい、直進すれば伊佐爾波神社の長い石段に突き当たります。石段の上り口に夏目旅館という小さな旅館があり（漱石との関係は？）ここで左折し５０ｍほどいけば右手に上人坂が見えます。坂を上り切ったところが宝厳寺で、時宗の開祖・一遍上人の生誕地と伝えています。山門と石垣と白壁の塀はなかなか風情があります。境内は広々としてますが、本堂や上人堂などは近年の再建らしく、文化財的な建造物はありません。山門前に元弘4年（1334）に一族の得能通綱が建てた「一遍上人御誕生舊跡」の石碑があります。 一遍は伊予水軍の総帥・河野氏の出身なので、このあたりに父の通広の屋敷があったのでしょうか。室町から戦国時代の河野氏の居城である湯築城（今は道後公園）もここから歩いて数分の距離にあります。 河野氏は鎌倉時代の承久の乱で朝廷側についたために敗れて、一遍の幼少期には勢力が衰えていました。一遍の祖父通信は陸奥国江刺郡（岩手県北上市）に、伯父の通末は信濃国佐久郡伴野（長野県佐久市）に流され、その地で没しています。後年、一遍は遊行の途中で二人の墓に詣で供養していますが、佐久で一遍が始めたと伝えられるのが...
