Shrine to the dragon gods. Amanohashidate Shrine is quite small, as many reviewers have pointed out. Nearby there is a pavilion which provides a nice place to rest in the shade if visiting during summer (which I was). The real appeal of this shrine is the purifying font to the left of the shine (closer to the water). While the bays on either side of the shrine are salt water, the font is "miraculously" fresh water, coming up from deep within the earth. There are many legends about Amanohashidate and dragon gods (one even explaining how the land bridge itself is a long green dragon flying across the sky), and in Japanese culture, dragons are often associated with water, which may explain this shrines connection to both water and dragons. There is a sign that says its best not to drink from the fresh water fountain, but I don't see any harm in touching the water to your lips to see for yourself its lack...

The shrine is located in Amanohashidate, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. It is a 15-20 minute walk from Amanohashidate Station through a pine forest.
