We actually wanted to go to Kofuku-ji Temple and thought we were in the right place, as there was a map of the temple in front of the entrance. The golden Buddha statue can be seen in the hall. It looks beautiful, but that's it and the entrance fee of 500 yen per person is not justified when you compare it to the other temples. Photos are not allowed inside the building. Next to it is the actual Kofuku-ji temple, I don't think it's fair to charge a separate fee for the Great Hall. After the Great Hall, we didn't go to the actual temple.

The place is huge and is just a 15-minute walk from the Nara station. The route to the place has a lot of shops and a lake just across the entrance, which is also great for pictures. The Palace grounds, if I may say, is free to all as it is a park. We didn't go inside the Palace since we are very happy taking pictures around. There are some reconstructions going on, but the place is open and the deers are around the place. Nice to just look around, take pictures then proceed to the next spot.

Many of the items in this national treasure museum are the remnants of cultural exchanges before the Tang Dynasty in China that have been revived and developed. The seated statue of Maitreya Buddha and the characters in the kitchen are typical Chinese characters. Shanxi Province in China is the province with the best-preserved ground buildings. It is recommended that everyone can go and have a look.🇨🇳

The Kohfukuji National Treasure Hall opened in 1959 as the first-ever facility for storing, protecting, and displaying cultural artefacts in the precincts of a shrine or temple anywhere in Japan. Its location was originally occupied by the temple refectory and its entrance hall. Although both of these Kamakura-period (1185-1333) structures were torn down in 1874 at the height of the anti-Buddhist persecutions of the early Meiji Period (1868-1912), the principal icon of the refectory, a colossal image of the Thousand-armed Kannon dating to the 13th century, miraculously escaped destruction and is now enshrined in its original location as the principal icon of the National Treasure Hall. Prominent among the many National Treasures housed in the building are a number of images formerly enshrined in the Western Golden Hall, which was lost to fire in 1717 and has not yet been rebuilt. These include the Tenpyō-period (729-749) sculptures of the Eight Kinds of Mythological Beings (among them the famous Ashura) and the Ten Great Disciples, as well as Kamakura-period images such as the lantern-bearing demons Ryūtōki and Tentōki and the paired images of the Kongō Rikishi, or thunderbolt-wielding warriors. National Treasures originally associated with other temple buildings include a Hakuhō-era (late seventh century) head of the Buddha Yakushi, a set of wooden relief carvings of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, votive offerings deposited in the foundation of the original Central Golden Hall, and the lantern that formerly stood in front of the...

No photos are allowed within, hence the lack of any here! This rule (along with no phones / technology, no loud talking, etc) is strictly enforced by many guards inside, providing an almost silent environment to appreciate the many statues inside.

Unfortunately as a non-local, an inability to speak Japanese meant around half of the exhibits were completely unexplained, and the other half had a very simple one-line description, leaving unclear what I was looking at. Regardless, the statues were very imposing, and the quiet cool atmosphere was much appreciated during a very hot day.

Looking around will take around 15-25 minutes, and there is a small gift shop afterwards selling...

Kofuku-ji Kokuhokan, also known as the National Treasure Hall, is a museum located within the historic Kofuku-ji Temple complex in Nara, Japan. It houses a stunning collection of Buddhist art and cultural treasures, many of which are designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. The hall was renovated and reopened in 2018 with modern display techniques to better preserve and present the artifacts. Among the most famous exhibits is the statue of Ashura, a graceful and expressive eighth-century sculpture. The museum offers visitors a chance to explore the deep artistic and spiritual heritage of Japan’s Nara period, making it a key destination for history and art...
