Wisteria: Uji Byodoin vs. Nara Manyo Botanical Garden 🌿

This very large and beautiful garden is worth its entrance fee. They also sell potted plants and wisteria bonsai trees. Recommended if you’re local. I go here every year to experience the wisteria and see various local plants. It may be educational for kids to learn and remember how different vegetables and fruits grow, as usually, you have to go to the countryside or a farm to see this. The beautiful and cute koi fish are adorable. I’d suggest they sell fish food in a gacha machine to earn some extra income and provide more fun for visitors. If you’re really into nature, it may be a great place to visit with kids to search for frogs and lizards. However, please remember to behave appropriately since this is private property, not a playground. Please be responsible and respect the love and care for nature that this garden displays. As a foreigner who has lived in Japan for almost a decade, I’ve seen enough inappropriate behavior from foreign tourists in Nara. Nara is like a sacred heaven for the Kansai region. Have a good time and enjoy the beauty of nature.

We arrived on April 25, 2018, and it was a very pleasant surprise to see the wisteria in full bloom. We were told the full bloom would last only 3 weeks, so we were really lucky to be there at that time. The garden had wisteria everywhere, including around a pond. We missed the peak of the cherry blossomed, but caught something almost as impressive, if not more impressive in its own way.

A small sealed off section of Nara Park. ¥500 entry is steep given there is not a great deal to see inside. I paid ¥100 for the last bag of fish food in the honesty box by the pond. I enjoyed feeding the Koi one by one and had a rest for about 30 minutes. Staff were mowing and whipper snipping the whole time I was there which detracted from what would have been a peaceful ambience. Nobody else in the park except me and a tourist couple who insisted on having a prolonged snogg session in all locations. Respect local culture and limit your PDAs!! Better off finding a quiet spot in Nara Park (free) if you want a break from the crowds. No deers inside botanical gardens.

The garden was ok. There was not a lot going on. It didn’t feel very botanical, more like a public school garden. There was a Japanese ceremony being demonstrated on the dock with live music that was very impressive and gave an unreal feeling while in a Japanese garden. The forest is a few km up the road which was well worth the walk. The walk up the road takes you the long way but it was well worth it. It does a full loop so you will end up at the main park. 1-2 hours of walking.

On the west side of the large parking lot at the Kasuga Taisha is the Manyo Botanical Garden, also known as the Kasuga Taisha Garden. This small botanical garden was opened in 1932 and contains all (±300) plants from the Man'yōshū, the oldest collection of Japanese poems. Each year around Culture Day, the Manyo Gagaku Performance Festival is held at the botanical garden. It is best to plan your visit during the blooming periods of the flowers.
