The Flying Dinosaur: A Thrilling, Unforgettable Ride (But Prepare for a Long Wait)
The Flying Dinosaur at Universal Studios Japan is hands-down one of the most exhilarating and unique roller coasters you’ll ever experience. Located in the Jurassic Park area of the park, this ride is a must-ride for adrenaline junkies, offering an unmatched blend of high-speed thrills and jaw-dropping moments. But while it delivers an unforgettable experience, the ride also comes with one major downside: the long wait times.
Ride Experience: From the moment you step into the queue, you know you're in for something special. The Flying Dinosaur is a winged roller coaster, meaning riders are suspended beneath the track, giving the sensation of flying. As the ride begins, you’re launched into a series of sharp drops, inversions, and high-speed twists, all while your feet dangle freely in the air. The sensation of being airborne—especially during the massive drops and the intense inversions—is what truly sets this ride apart.
One of the most memorable parts of the ride is its first drop, which is both steep and long, plunging riders from an incredible height with such force that it leaves your stomach behind. The coaster also features a series of loops and inversions, which, combined with the sensation of flying, make for an absolutely thrilling experience. The high-speed moments and rapid twists feel incredibly intense, yet there's something almost weightless about it, thanks to the way the coaster suspends you.
Atmosphere and Themings: The Flying Dinosaur is not just about the ride itself—it also immerses you in a thrilling dinosaur-themed experience. The queue and surrounding area are filled with dinosaur-themed décor, adding to the excitement and anticipation. As you prepare to board the ride, the roaring sounds of prehistoric creatures and the looming presence of large, animatronic dinosaurs help heighten the sense of adventure.
The Long Wait: One thing to keep in mind before heading to the Flying Dinosaur is that it has notoriously long wait times, often exceeding 90 minutes, especially during peak hours. Since it’s one of the most popular rides at USJ, the line tends to build up quickly, and the queue can feel slow-moving at times. The ride’s popularity, combined with its high capacity and long track, means that you’ll need to dedicate a fair amount of time if you want to experience it. For those short on time, it may be worth considering an Express Pass to bypass the long wait.
Is It Worth the Wait? Absolutely. Despite the long queue, the Flying Dinosaur remains one of the best rides in the entire park. It’s an adrenaline-pumping, heart-racing experience that delivers thrills from start to finish. The sensation of flight, combined with the intensity of the ride's maneuvers, makes it stand out as one of USJ’s top attractions. For thrill-seekers, it’s one of those rides that’s well worth the time and effort.
Conclusion: The Flying Dinosaur is undoubtedly one of the best rides at Universal Studios Japan. Its intense, heart-stopping thrills, combined with its unique flying coaster design, make it a standout attraction for anyone visiting the park. While the long wait can be a downside, the ride itself is so exhilarating that it’s hard to leave USJ without experiencing it. If you’re willing to endure the line, the Flying Dinosaur is a highlight that will leave you breathless and...
This is the most popular and most thrilling attraction among all the scream attractions in Universal Studios Japan. One of the reasons for the attraction's popularity is that it is an outdoor, real-life thrill ride, rather than a visual effect or an artificially created floating, sprinting, and thrilling experience. Therefore, a 30-minute wait is the norm even on weekdays when it is not crowded. It is not a situation where you can chat with your friend or partner during the ride, so it is probably better to enjoy the ride as a single rider. While the upper body is naturally secured during boarding, there is absolutely no device to secure anything below the knees. Also, some areas under the coaster rails are set with nets in case objects fall, but not all the rails are set with nets. Therefore, depending on the location, falling objects may hit people under the rails, and it is basically impossible to retrieve fallen objects. This may also be the reason why almost all removable items other than shoes and clothes are urged to be removed and stored in lockers, and if even one item that may fall is left behind, no matter what the circumstances, boarding is not permitted. Note that there is also a metal detector, and the checks are quite strict. Also note that the number of lockers is not very large and that locker tickets issued when using a locker must be kept on board (if you lose your locker ticket, you may not be able to retrieve your luggage from the locker). You may think that the pre-boarding procedures are quite strict and quite complicated, but it's still an exceptionally interesting attraction. On the other hand, if you get used to the pre-boarding procedures, you will be able to use the service smoothly and enjoy the most thrilling...
Read moreFlying Dino is one of the best rollercoasters on Earth period, and yes, I'm comparing it to all the other B&M's, Intamin's, RMC's, gigas, hypers, and woodies out there. Easily my favorite coaster in Japan. While there's no elaborate queue or pre-shows, this ride does a fairly accurate job of conveying what it would feel like if a Pteranodon scooped you up. Minus sharp talons piercing you and certain death of course. Soaring above the lush greenery of Jurassic Park offers some awesome views when you're not mid-loop!! Run straight to this beast at rope drop. And then go for re-rides if you can handle it. Later the line will shoot up to well over two hours......
