The hotel’s photos looked good, but upon arrival, we were disappointed. The room smelled of mold and the bedroom carpet was so full of stains that we felt uncomfortable and decided to sleep in the tatami room instead. It was also slightly quieter in there. In the normal bedroom you could hear everything from the outside.

The armchairs were filthy, as was most everything (although at least the toilet and bathroom were alright), so we didn’t feel like touching anything in the room. The handwashing sink’s tap was missing the warm water handle, so we couldn’t get warm water. We also didn’t understand the floor plan at all. It felt more like an office, or maybe a cheap hostel, rather than a hotel. Our room had a long corridor and what I can only describe as a… waiting room?

The balcony of the room continued all the way to a co-working space nearby, so if anyone would have wanted to stare into our room, they could have done that. In fact, the entire side building that the co-working space and our room was in, smelled like vomit and looked like it hadn’t been renovated since shouwa. It had a creepy air to it.

The onsen was good, but apart from that we felt slightly uncomfortable with everything. When we went to check the room explanations on the website again to understand how we ended up booking something so bad, we noticed that all the rooms had photos, except the one we had. I understand why.

The room was called the Annex Shirasuna Garden sum + Western-style, and apparently it’s ”the only room combining Japanese and Western rooms”. So maybe we just had bad luck and other room types would have been better. However our room was not the only one in the side building and having seen the corridors, I don’t have high hopes for the other rooms either.

We might come to Shirahama again, because the city was nice, but we won’t be staying in this hotel a...

Just to be honest from the outset- me and my husband did not spend the night and sleep here. We were so concerned by the cleanliness of the hotel that we asked for a refund (we were supposed to stay for 2 nights). We originally quickly put our bags in our hotel room, went to the beach, then returned to the hotel. It wasn't until we returned from the beach that we actually property looked at the state of the room.||||The room itself was big. However, the doors to the outside were left open, so when we arrived there were lots of spiders and mosquitos around. There was also a dead fly in the ceiling light and what looked like spider nests all around the ceiling of the room.||||There was also countless, random stains all around the room.||||While this is a small detail, it is also worth mentioning that the hotel also stated it had WiFi available in all rooms when we booked through Expedia. However, it was only available in reception ||||After complaining about this room, we were shown another room by the hotel staff. However, this room still had bugs in it and was equally dirty. We were offered a third room, but by this point, just wanted to leave.||||We have backpacked around Japan for 3 weeks now and have been in a combination of hotels and ryokens, as well as Western and Japanese style rooms. We have pretty low standards when it comes to rooms and have never asked for a refund on any hotel until we came here.||||We booked the hotel through Expedia, but the hotel wanted to give us cash refund. We felt unsure about this, but just wanted to leave there as soon as possible.||||I was originally not going to leave a review. However, the positive reviews of this hotel are what led us to choose it- and we personally feel as though they are not accurate or a true reflection of what we experienced...

Although it's conveniently close to the beach, unfortunately you can't see the Engetsu island from resort. There's a convenient store nearby and a supermarket and Daiso not far from the roundabout circle left of the resort. The onsen is passable but wish there's more efforts to the landscaping/decorating the open onsens. The room's wall decor also seems passed expiry, with yellowed hanging art pieces that looks neglected. The Yukata provided are mostly worn out and faded as well. The reception service varied from rather dismissive to earnestly polite but not able to understand rudimentary English or totally no one in attendance. Somehow feel 2nd class to locals as foreign tourists patronising the place as most information are in Japanese. They have a well stocked communal kitchen with big fridges and charcoal filtered water tumblers that one can bring to room which we didn't know. We spent buying bottled water till we discovered this late sadly. There's no escalator nor lift so it'll be hard dragging heavy luggage to your room with seemingly no doorman service. It's a very old establishment while I do love the traditional Japanese royken design and the spacious different areas of the room design, I can't help but feel some aspects are however not well maintained and neglected.
