Ramen Bakumatsu - Nanki Shirahama — Restaurant in Shirahama

I would strongly advise against dining at this restaurant - unless you enjoy eating ramen while being mocked and provoked by the staff.

I’ve never experienced anything like this anywhere - whether in North America, Europe, or Asia. In fact, I’ve never written a 1-star negative review for any restaurant before.

Tonight after waiting for about 20 minutes, I went inside to check the waiting list. A male staff member told me to leave rudely in Japanese (which is fine—I’m Asian—but his tone and mocking look were really unpleasant). Two minutes later, when our number was called, no one came to seat us. The same staff member kept joking with his colleagues behind the counter and kept looking at us with a provoking attitude.

When I called him to place our order, we changed one item, and he visibly showed annoyance. He ripped the order sheet hard, clearly expressing his frustration.

At the end, we shared our concerns with the manager. The manager looked surprised, read our translated complaint aloud, but didn’t apologize. Instead, he smiled and told the staff to say a mechanical “thank you,” as if they were used to this kind of feedback.

The ramen itself was average, not terrible, but the service was truly disgusting. I later saw other reviews mentioning similar experiences, so it’s clear the restaurant has no intention of improving. First time to be treated in this manner in Japan, crazy.

This is a wonderful restaurant and was a highlight of our trip! We visited with our child during nap time and they made sure to seat us in a table where we had enough room to keep our baby in the carriage, then were very quick to bring out our food.
